TI2014 Hanges Freezes when Deleting Backup

I created a Disk backup and a File backup using TI2014. The destination was an attached external hard disk drive. Now, when I try to delete the backups by going to the "Backup and recovery" tab and clicking on the appropriate "gear" symbol, and selecting "X Delete", TI2014 displays the message "Deleting backup ..." but TI2014 hangs (freezes) and nothing happens.
According to the User Guide, I should not delete backups using Windows File Explorer.
Can anyone please advise how to prevent TI hanging, or how to delete the backup?
The operating system is Windows 8.1
