TIH 2013 Build 6514: Specify a subdir for backup location

Thread needs solution

Just began using TIH 2013 and can not figure out how to specify a particular subdir for a backup. The external drive I use serves many other systems. I can not use the generic "My backups" as a location. I had no problem with this with TIH 2010. Please describe what I must do to specify a previously set up subdir as the location for a TIH 2013 backup. For example, I want to store TIH 2013 backups for this machine under T:\Disk Images\CMR7 NOT T:\My backups! I do not want to make reserve copies either (take much too long!).

At the above link,
look at figures 6, 7, 8

Figure 8 shows how you can create your own folder (or figure can be pre-created)
and select that folder for your backups.
Also shows how to assign your own custom name to the backup file.

Note you can have custom folder names and custom backup file names.
The name assigned to the backup file bacomes the task name but you should change the name of the task to something more meaning ful and this name creation should be done as part of the task creation. Before you click save on the task creation, change the task name. This is also illustrated toward the end of the various picture examples.

When you create a backup task, you have the opportunity to browse to a target path and choose whatever folder you like. You can at that point also name the backup file, which is the only chance you'll have to do that.

Thank you for this.

I will have to study this for some more time as I did not immediately find these options in my copy of TIH 2013.

Another problem: When I copy a backup image to another location (drive-folder), The program will not recognize it at all and I can not validate it. I can browse to the copy but when I click on "Add to backup list" the backup list is not updated -- even after quitting and restarting the program.

This appears to be the most difficult interface I have ever worked with -- much worse than previous versions of TIH.

My post #1 is applicable to both 2012 and 2013. If you replicate figures 6, 7 & 8 on your 2013, it will match your 2013 installation. As in figure 7, once you click on the browse option, the whole directory tree of drives and folders become available and selectable. Very definitely, you can create a new tassk pointing to a new storage folder with a name of your choosing.

Regarding your issue with "Add to backup list". OPen TrueImmage (in Windows) and look at the displayed tasks. Look carefully at the one where you copied the backups to a different drive and folder. Look again at the path displayed onthe screen for that task under the location line. I beieve youmay find that the path has changed from its original location to the new folder/drive where you stored your copy. If the task had the backup now option before, that probably changedso the only option listed is the Recovery option. If I am correct in my assessment, try validating the task in its new location.

I would suggest you review all the examples in link provided by both me and MVP Tuttle. 2013 is different than past versions.

I will also study this new material to see if I can understand it.

The earlier material did help. I was able to create an image in a location I specified - somehow. I still can not even understand how to reliably NAME an archive with this program!

As for the new problem, why does not the program show BOTH files (original and copy)? This is more like a puzzle game than a productive program.

Charles,
With a little practice, you will begin to understand how the *.tib backup files are named or you can change the location and name to your own custom settings. As long as you understnad that the name of *.tib file is assigned by the user or program when inside the folder as shown in figure 8. This is the only place where you can assign a custom name.

Figure 8: Assign folder name and assign custom backup file name

The names of the backup files can only be changed as in Figure 8; whereas the task name can differ from the backup file name. Task name changed or re-assigned in figure 18,
In 2013, all backup files will have a program added suffix to the *.tib name such as
   user assigned name_FULL_B1_S1_V1.tib
user assigned name_INC_B1_S2_V1.tib as per this link example
    http://forum.acronis.com/sites/default/files/mvp/user285/guides/test201…
Understand that the backup file name is not task name and the task name is not the backup file name. The task name and the backup file name are two separate entities. They both may or may NOT carry the same name but that is a user controlled option.

Note this figure 18. When creating the initial backup task, you can change the backup name (i.e.: task name--not the name of backup file) from its default name to one of your own choosing. This name change can occur as illustrated on the screen below as listed in green ink. Changing or finalizing the backup file task name must be done (during task creation) before you click the "backup now or backup later" options.

Figure 18: Completed settings of task

(Backup name=Task name.  Accept or change task name.)

The user really does have complete control over assigning
Target folder name
*.tib backup file name
Backup task name

as listed above.

I would concur with your desire to have a copy of a target backup to appear in the listing of tasks--should the user want both listed. Currently, it appears the choice is one or the other but not both.

Practice creating a few sample tasks and then use the "remove from listing" option to get rid of each practice task.
