TIH won't restore Error: can't read file insert most recent disk backup

Thread needs solution

I used Acronis trial version to save me from another problem so I bought Acronis 2011 Home. I tried to restore a system backup but nothing happened or was changed. Then I started getting the "can't read file..." message. I tried using the emergency disk I created but get the same result no matter what backup I try to restore.

Talked to a tech and followed the suggestions and eventually uninstalled and reinstalled Acronis along with drivers, but still having the same problem.

I am saving to my HD (which seemed to work fine with the trial) and am using Win 7 64 bit.

Any easy suggestions (I'm no computer wiz) or is this program useless to me?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Donnie,

What type of image did you make?

Were the images made with TI 2011?

Were the images saved to an internal, external drive, CD/DVD's or to a NAS?

If you have TI2011 installe don your current machine are you able to either mount or explore the images? (Right click on a tib file and you should see the Explore or Mount choice. Failing that you can mount a file from within TI 2011)

Are you able to validate the file(s) either in Windows or from the rescue CD?

Colin,

Thanks for your reply. It's much appreciated.

The backup was just a system backup that took about 30 seconds to make, not a full partition (which takes about an hour or more for me).

It was to the internal HD as the computer.

They were made with TI Home 2011 (the trial version seemed to work as a did a recovery with that once).

I am not able to mount and view anything. When I go though the process and open the "recovery" folder there is nothing there--yet the mounted version shows up as having 1.24 Gig as System E on the computer. So it's there it seems but unreadable or invisible.

I can open the "MyBackup" backup location folders on my HD from File Explorer and there are sub folders present. (They say partition backup System (1) or (2)....) It seems I can only attempt to mount via TIH, but possibly that's the only way to do so. I see no way of doing it in the Windows right click menus.

For some reason, maybe normal, but when I navigate through these folders in MyBackup folder the "Recovery" folder has a "System32" folder and "WindowsRE" folder. My system is Win 7 64 bit, so I don't know it that's a problem or not.

I have tried to validate, but I can't tell that anything happens. There's no notification that I have validated anything.

Thank you again for your help as I really want Acronis to work. It seems like a lifesaver (if it works).

Just going to bed........

Thirty seconds seems very quick.

I'm a little confused, you say you can't mount or explore, but then say you've been able to mount the image as partition E.

Has anything changed, for example, you've re-installed Windows?

Are you able to try making another image, and see if that is viewable or indeed able to be validated?

Unfortunately TI 2011 doesn't report validations apart from in the log file - I think though I'm not sure that is being fixed in the update.

Is the drive that contains the image a separate drive or another partition on your main drive?

It mounts but seems empty ("This Folder Is Empty" is what I get after mounting). SystemE

I can explore to some extent, but this is not a mounted version just the backup itself. I can't get to any personal files via windows. Looks like files necessary for restore the system to me.

Yes, I've made several versions but the same things happens.

The drive containing the image is the same as the main drive. (C\MyBackup.....)

Thanks again for taking the time to help!

Also the last version is validated but not explorable when mounted. Folder Empty.

Backup is differential is that matters.

No I haven't reinstalled Windows.

The only real difference I can think of is I installed COMODO Internet Security but am only using the Defence+ part of it as I run Norton 360.

Thanks again

No one has a suggestion?

Currently Acronis has a system report I took from the program, but this seems to have stumped them too. Now I guess I'm wondering if I can get my money back seeing the restore software won't restore.

Still open to any suggestions.

The right click problem may be due to a bug, in that 2011:5519 doesn't allow context access to archives it imports, though whether that also relates to the full version over the top of the trial I'm doubtful.

So, if you Explore an image what files and folders can you see and which ones does it refuse to open? My Documents for example.

You are aware that a system only file will only contain the files necessary for getting your system booted.

I think we should try and concentrate on full disk images, as not only will these contain the system files, but from my (selfish) point of view makes it easier to know what should and shouldn't be in a parts of the image.

I want to really ensure we are referring to the same things, otherwise we shall be confusing each other.

Normally folders that appear empty and show zero bytes is often down to the files having a different SSID to the current system, hence my question about re-installing Windows.

Have you made a rescue CD as yet? You need to know that that can boot your computer and see all your drives and that the mouse and keyboard work. System restores should be done from the CD so that Windows has no way of interfering.

How are you trying to restore? Are you starting up TIH and clicking on recovery or have you activated the Acronis Start Up Manager and recovering via that?

Recovering in Windows is fine for recovery of non system partitions.

Now that the new build is out, I would suggest uninstalling TIH, running if possible the Acronis clean up tool and then install the latest build.

As your A/V isn't based on Alvira, I don't at this moment in time think it is a firewall problem, though I dislike Nortons products intensely due to the way they embed and take over ones PC.

As you are using W7 could you post either here (preferable) or via PM snipshots of the steps you take in making a complete disk image and then perhaps a mounting.

Is this internal hard drive you are using for storing the image a seperate drive or another partition on your main drive?

In MSConfig under the Startup tab, is Acronis Timounter shown as loaded? This is the program that manages mounting of images.

Thanks Colin for the detailed response. I haven't had time to work through it all yet, but will certainly do so.

Briefly let me respond in part. No I haven't reinstalled Windows. I was doing more of the system snapshots (and one full--I can see "my documents" etc in that. I'll more carefully read your email and work through it when I get a chance--soon I hope! I was just surprised that when I tried to restore a small System restore (stored on the same HD) that Acronis gave me an error message about not being able to read the files, and to insert the most current disk with a backup on it (Both via a created boot disc and just running the program on the HD. I'm concerned that if I need to restore something I won't be able to do so.

The new version didn't change anything and I couldn't get the clean up tool for whatever reason.

I need to run, but assure you I will work on you suggestions and reply more fully in a day or so I hope.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. It's much appreciated.

Colin, thanks very much for your willingness to help with my problem. I appreciate your time in this matter. It seems I completely misunderstood what Acronis did when it backed up the small System NTFS files. These are no good alone and require the whole C drive to make it usable for a roll back. I have not tried a restore yet with a whole image, but will give it a try when I've got time to kill.

Since I was the actual problem I want to apologize for taking up your time in this. You did help me better understand the program, and for that I'm grateful.

Thanks again fro your help,

Donnie

OK, post back here if you still have a problem.
