Transfer to new computer

Thread needs solution

Is it possible using an Acronis True Image 11 full back up to transfer all my settings, programs, files etc from my existing laptop to my new laptop? The existing laptop has Windows 7 32bit home premium as an OS, the new one has the 64bit version.

The short answer is no because the first thing that will happen is that your 64 bit OS will be overwritten with the 32 bit OS.

The second thing that will happen unless the hardware is absolutely identical is that the hardware drivers will be wrong. This can be corrected by letting Windows detect the mismatches and repairing Windows to fix the drivers. Acronis does have a product called Universal Restore that you can buy, I believe it is included in the Plus pack for TI2010, that will allow easier migration to different hardware. Since TI11 is not supported on Windows 7 you would also have to upgrade to TI2010 for that reason as well.

A third, more of a personal opinion, reason is that fooling around with laptop hardware is often more complicated than desktop hardware and a dealing with a force-fit installation can be more problematic.

I know it can be a bit of a time-sink but I view a new machine as a chance to get rid of the apps and files I rarely use. You also won't have to wonder if some obscure problem that shows up later is caused by the old OS being applied to the new machine. OTOH, it has been done - with the caveat that you will have the 32-bit OS.

Thanks for your advice Seekforever, I was just looking for a lazy way to do it. However it does make sense to use it as an opportunity to have a clear out of unwanted apps & files.

Thanks again for your help
