Transfering TI 2010 from Vista to Windows 7

Thread needs solution

I just upgraded my notebook from 32-bit Vista (where my recently purchased TI 2010 was installed) to 64-bit Windows 7. I can't install TI 210 on the Windows 7 with the same serial number I used on Vista. What gives?
I asked this from the tech support but I might as well not have done it because the obviously Indian help desk did not understand my question and came up with a suggestion that sounded as something cooked up by an AI software after parsing my question.

You should be able to use the same serial number. Are you getting an error message?

What build of TI 2010 are you trying to install?

That's what I thought, too, but the error msg indicated that it was not the right ser #.
The build is 6,029.

You could try build 6,053 and see if it works with your serial number.

Otherwise, since the problem concerns the serial number and Tech Support was unable to help, find a post on the forum by an Acronis Support member/moderator and send them a PM with the details.

Well, I tried to install build 6053 with the same result. I suspect that on new install the installer checks the serial # on the central server to see if it was alredy used and refuses to allow duplicate installation with it as a protection against pirated use. There is apparently no provision for somebody to reuse the same serial # when the OS is upgraded.

I should have waited with my previous post before I tried one more thing that solved my problem.
Here is the thing:
In prior install attempts I aborted the process after putting in the TI 2010 license key and the installer then came back and asked for the old license key (serial #) as well because it did not make sense to me. I bought the TI 2010 version as a new one even though I also used to have a TI 11 version before. However, as it was two versions older than the 2010 edition (it being TI 13, really), I did not figure that the installer would still ask for the serial number for that old one. However, with the last install attempt I did enter that TI 11 serial number as the old one and that did the trick. The installation then completed successfully though I haven't done a backup with it yet.

Hello JoPa,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to solve the issue.

You can use one serial number on a single computer after OS reinstall, it won’t expire or smth. in case the software was installed before.

According to our registration database you have an upgrade version of Acronis True Image Home 2010. Upgrades are full packages but always requires the previous version serial number, that is why your first attempt wasn’t successful.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.
