Trouble with Iomega Zip Drives

Thread needs solution

Is there anyone out there using Iomega Zip drives for backup?

It appears that on my computers running XP that ATIH 2012 disables and/or corrupts all Iomega operations except straight reading or writing data to the discs. E.g. it cannot format the discs, and hangs up if anything other than a straight R/W of data is undertaken, even disabling software eject and after that insisting that no disc is in the drive unless I reboot the computer. Then the problem repeats. Uninstalling ATIH 2012 "fixes" the problem but, of course, then I have no backup capability.

After more experimentation I have determined that it is the v6131 update that is corrupting the IomegaWare. By uninstalling ATIH 2012 and reinstalling v5545 the IomegaWare works fine.

To verify (I'm a brute for punishment) I applied the v6131 update and the IomegaWare was again destroyed. I uninstalled the v6131 versions on both of my computers with Zip drives and installed only v5545 and both computers work fine.

The bad news is that I don't have all the "features" involved in whatever was done to v6131 (which is also apparently good news). That and I am out the cost of a Zip drive since both drives that appeared to have failed due to the corruption by ATIH 2012 are actually still good drives. I guess everyone needs a spare now and then.

Some good news is that exporting all my settings from v6131 and then importing them after reloading v5545 seems to have made it. At least I didn't have to do that manually.

I guess one thing to keep in mind is that any odd behavior in your computer may or may not be due to ATIH 2012, but you would be wise to consider that it is involved. Too bad.
