True Image 13/Plus Pack functionality

Thread needs solution

I have replaced my Windows 7 PC/True Image 11 by Win8/True Image 13 upgrade.
I have a complete backup of my old system, much of which I wish to transfer to the new PC.
Can I do this for BOTH data AND programmes using True Image 13?
If not, would Plus Pack help?
Many thanks

John,

No the Plus Pack won't help in your case, if you recover your image you will be back to Windows 7.

There is only one program that I know of that claims to be able to 'port' your W7 settings and program entries into W8, but it belongs to a competitior of Acronis'. I haven't used the program and have no idea how good it is at performing this.

I suppose what you could do though, is to recover the W7 image and then install W8 over the top, programs that are not W8 compatible will not run and might cause some instability until removed - True Image 11 or 2011 being one of them.

Colin,

Do I understand there is no way of extracting even the data files from my W7/TrueImage 11 backup using TI 13?
That is a disaster and, surely, a serious failing.

Also, I can't see how to extract individual files from a TI 13 backup in the way one could with TI 11. Or is that aslo impossible?

Yes, 2013 can restore backups made using 2011. That's not what Colin is saying. You seem to want to copy your programs from the backup to the new Win8 installation, and that won't work. That is not an Acronis problem, that is a Windows issue. You can certainly restore your data, but Windows programs cannot simply be copied over, they must be installed.

What Colin is suggesting is a method by which you wouldn't have to install the programs.

You can do a recovery and choose files/folders, to restore just files and folders rather than a disk/partition. Or, once ATI2013 is installed in Win8, you could launch a a .tib archive to open it in Windows Explorer and then copy over the files you want. Or, you can mount the archive.

As Tuttle says John, there is no problem in restoring your data or any programs that don't use Windows registry, again as Tuttle mentions you can either explore the image archive from within True Image 2013 and drag the data you want into W8 or you can mount th eimage as a virtual drive using True Image and access them that way, but programs will be a no go, you will need to reinstall them.

There is one thing to note, some files might refuse to be opened or in Windows 8 report them selves as zero bytes in size, this will be because the security ID that Windows attaches to files will not match the ones created by the Windows 8 install. Basically your user ID is now different, all is not lost though, you just need to add your current permissions to the data you recover.

This may or may not happen, if it does we can help you reassign the permissions to your new Windows user ID.

There are also some recent forum posts on this matter where I and James F have shown how to do this.
