True Image 2009 - Hangs during recovery

Thread needs solution

I am using Acronis True Image 2009 with Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit). I have created a full image backup of my system and it verifies correctly. My laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-AW21 and I have replaced the hard drive with a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB unit and want to restore the image from the original disk. The backup resides on an external USB hard drive.

However when using the Acronis boot CD to initiate the recovery mode, the wizard gets as far as the screen saying No Location Specified. Then selecting "New Location" just causes the system to freeze completely.

I have tried several times without success; I've also tried the boot disk in a desktop machine and it freezes at the same point. The new Seagate HDD is recognised as it appears on the list of drives, so I' at my wits end as to what's causing the failure.

This comes as a major disappointment because I've religiously backed up my whole system every couple of months for the last two years, but now I need to use it in earnest it has failed.

Please - does anyone have a fix for this problem?

Peter,

From this post, it looks like your recovery CD doesn't contain the right drivers (pretty old version). You have to download the latest ISO from your Acronis account or try the new 2011 version.

Hi Pat L,

Thanks for your response. I've not used my Acronis account very often, so could you please tell me how to download the latest ISO?

You have to go to Acronis.com, create a user account there. Then you will have the opportunity to register your serial number. Once this is done, you have access to a download area where you can download your product, the bootable ISO, plug-ins, etc.

Thanks again Pat L for your prompt reply.

Having read similar threads to mine (e.g. http://forum.acronis.com/forum/9790), I decided to wait a couple of minutes for a response to "New Location". I was pleasantly surprised that it found my drives and then proceeded through a successful restore taking several hours.

I may follow your advice and acquire True Image 2011, although TI 2009 does seem to work OK (for me) with Windows 7.

Just a shame that there is no "Please Wait" and/or an hourglass to let you know that something is happening, as I suspect that most users will lose patience after half a minute or so. Does TI 2011 have this same delay during restore?

Peter,

If you are restoring your system partition, the preferred method for many of us is to use the Rescue CD for the restore and this restore method has been suggested in many of prior user guides.

I realize you have had difficulty with this method but the latest build(6857) seems to have fixed a lot of issues.

I have noticed the delay with 2009 and 2010 but it was never really objectionable and my system has 4 internal disks with all drive letters in use up to S.

Hi GroverH,

When you say "Rescue CD", do you mean the boot CD that True Image allows you to make (the one I have been using), or is it something different?

Peter,
Yes, we are talking the same one and each new version or build always has an updated CD. Any of the newer builds rescue CD can be used to restore backups created with prior versions.

My build of TI2009 is 9,770 and as noted, it seems to work OK with Windows 7 (after some trials and tribulations!).

Anyway I may upgrade to TI2011, as I believe an upgrade will be cheaper than buying TI2011 from scratch.

Peter,
Be sure and do a backup of your system partition before installing 2011. Having such a backup would enable you to put your system back the same way it was at time of backup.

And uninstall 2009 before installing 2011...
