True Image 2011: backups failing due to "specified file can not be found"

Thread needs solution

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and waiting upgrade to Windows 10- the compatibility program for the upgrade requests me to remove True Image 11. This I will do and upgrade to True Image 2016, which is compatible.

However I have been experiencing problems over the past few months with existing backups with True Image 2011, with this message popping up at intermittent intervals "specified file can not be found". I believe this is due to my system failing to recognise my external USB hard drive. I have tried different hard drives, changed ports and cables but it still happens. If I can catch the message while doing a file/folder backup and click retry, it will carry on but this is not always convenient. When trying to create an image, it was impossible to get the backup to continue at all. I have also tried turning off my Internet security program (not a good idea of course) but it still happens.

I have tried a couple of other backup programs as well and the same thing happens so I am not "blaming" Acronis! However I am a loss to know what is causing this and I am hoping that someone out there can point me in the right direction. I need to fix this before upgrading of course to ensure that my vital files are safely backed up.

I attach an extract from today's log where this occurred

Many thanks in advance

With 2016 now installed. I am assuming that you have created all new backup tasks.

You might consider trying a different usb cable or connector if you believe you might be lossing your connection.

Anytime the usb storage disk is attached, TrueImage is expecting and requiring that the drive letter be the same as when the task was created.
Sometimes, Windows will change drive letters due to which extra devices might be attached. When a wrong drive letter is the issue, that message would be applicable.

Thanks for your reply. I have not yet installed True Image 2016- I am trying to fix this error before going any further! I can confirm that I have tried a new cable and that the drive letter is not changing. This happens on different external drives and on other ports and with other programs so I am leaning towards the USB driver...but I am not sure what I can do here as the website for my motherboard (Asus) only have an updated driver for my eXtensible Host Controller, which I have also installed. I guess I could try getting in touch with Asus and see if they can help!

Is this a desktop or laptop? If desktop, try connecting to a rear outlet. Don't plus your backup drive into a printer or usb-hub detc. Use only a direct connect.

Is the usb storage disk a usb2 or usb3?
What are some of the specifics of the usb disk such as brand and size

This also could be a "sleep" issue in that the usb disk could be in sleep mode during the check.

Another option is to look at the Control Panel/Power cofigurations

and look at the settings of the selected pwer settings for the usb settings.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this very useful information. I can confirm that my HDD' are plugged directly into the ports, although one is on the front panel. I will check the sleep mode issue and the specs of my drives and come back with the results.

I also spoke to my PC's makers and they suggested uninstalling the host driver and rebooting before updating with the newer driver from the Asus web site, rather than just updating over the old one.

It is a learning curve!
