True image 2014 backup strategies for libraries

Thread needs solution

I wish to keep the operating system separate from data for backups by having them on different drives. In Win 7 the libraries will reflect the data locations, in my case on a drive different from the operating system. What will happen when I restore the operating system, which will be a disk recovery, to an earlier date, and hence the restored libraries may not match the data? Does my backup strategy need to include separate, and more frequent, library backups in addition to OS and Data backups? Thanks for the help in this transition from Win XP.

Your library backups should indeed be more frequent than your OS and App Data backups. When you perform a backup with ATI of your OS disk, the location of your libraries will be backed up but not the libraries themselves as they are on a separate disk. You must backup your library disk separately and therefore more frequently to obtain/retain current changes to your user data files.

What I am driving at here is how to best return my system to an earlier state, now that I have to deal with libraries in Win 7. I am thinking that since the libraries will reference data on a different drive, you would start with a known good OS backup and restore with it, then restore the libraries with the latest library backups. While this will be multiple steps to get the job done, I see no other alternative, except to not use libraries. Does this make sense or am I over thinking this? Is there a better way?

You are correct in your thinking and it makes perfect sense. As for a better way, if you want most user data separate from the OS then not really.
