True Image Build 2009.9796 problem

Thread needs solution

I had been working with Acronis Support via email about the best way to go from build 2009.9709 to build 2009.9796 which was their recommended level. In their email, they gave me a URL to download and install this new file named TrueImage2009.9796_s_en.exe. I was to execute and install this file without deleting my old file. I was given detailed instructions to do this. It completed the install without error, and I created and tested a new Rescue Boot CD at the new level. Everything looked good. I even replied to the support email, saying all went well. Later on, I wanted to try creating a new full backup Archive with this new level. When I came time to write the new tib file, it said the same file name (MyBackup.tib) already exists out on my external drive (Which was true), and that if I continue, I will overwrite it, destroying the original file. It appears that the new build does not know what tib files are already out on the external HD, until it tries to write a duplicate. I suppose I could rename the existing MyBackup.tib file to MyBackup(4).tib (which I deleted a while back because it was no longer needed). Is it normal to start at the beginning tib filename when updating to a new level, or did the support people send me something other than a simple update? They said the link they sent me is valid for five times, and will expire in two weeks. I wrote back to support about this, but have not received a reply. I have a feeling I may end up holding the bag myself on this one. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am using the same version and build number as you are.  I am also creating FULL backup images to an external HD.  I create a manual weekly backup using the rescue CD.  I give each backup a unique ID such as MyBackup 09.01.09.tib / MyBackup 09.08.09.tib.etc.  Using the same name will overwrite your previous backup.  I usually keep 8 weekly backups and then start deleting them in the Windows environment  I believe that I read here that Acronis will recognize backups made with the previous version but someone else should address that.

Too many questions.

You need to have some idea of how any why you want to do backups. I f you do then TI can do it. We all know that TI creates MyBackup.tib files but for most of us it does not stay that way - be personal. You seem intelligent enough so just try things.

After looking more closely where it was trying to store the new tib archive, I realized it was now looking at the C: drive partition instead of the G: external drive. I had to browse and point to the G: partition. I then had to click on "Generate Name". Now, it was looking at the correct partition, and selected a filename that was not in use. I did not have to do this before the update. It will be interesting to see if I have to go through this on the next backup, or if it will remember the correct path to the G: partition. I am not a PC guru, and can be easily fooled, but I am learning.

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate it.

With TI2009 if the backup drive is not available when altering any task, the image location and name will automatically default to the My Documents\My Backups\mybackup.tib .

You didn't have to click on the 'generate name' button, just browsing and selecting the original FULL would have attached that file to the task.

As someone else mentioned in passing, I would give the image name something more meaningful to you, otherwise if you decide to run more than one task or want to change a task but keep the old tasks images, you'll find yourself getting lost in deciding what file name belongs where.
