True Image can't find hard drive
Running WinXP Pro & True Image 9.0, Build 3854. I recently had a problem with my computer not booting up, so I took it for repairs. Although, I can now boot up, when I start True Image, I get the following error message:
E000101F4: Acronis True Image Home has not found any hard disk drives.
I reinstalled True Image & rebooted, hoping to repair files, but the problem still remains. Also, I'm not sure what services Acronis should be running.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you,
Phil

Hi Grover:
Thanks for the ideas. I did have a new video card put in. I'm afraid to do a complete backup, as my system wasn't working properly before the repair & I couldn't even reboot. Do you know where I could get up-to-date drivers? (Although, wouldn't the wrong driver prevent TI from even loading?

The first thing I would do is get myself a full backup of the system. You can do that using the TI Rescue CD. Doing this would be a good check to make sure your recovery cd can still see your drives.
If you are using the same disks, the error does make any sense but past experience has indicated that the error message is not always referring to the correct error.
As your version is quite old and being updated, I am not sure you can find any help to make your current system work in Windows. You can try re-installing one more time but I would not do without performing the full disk option backup before you do anything else.
If you want to try the trial version of version 2011, be sure and uninstall your existing TI install before installing something new.

Here is a link to possibly new drivers. Do not install until you have completed your full backup of your system as mentioned above.

Hi Grover:
Thanks for your help. I did a full backup from my rescue CD, which did recognize the drives. The link above is for TI Version 10, so I'm afraid to try it.
In the Device Manager, there are two entries for Acronis (both say Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer).
Should I do the following in this order:
1. uninstall Acronis in device manager
2. uninstall TI
3. reboot
4. reinstall TI
5. reboot
do you think that would repair any corrupt drivers? Version 9 was an upgrade from Version 8. Is that why there are 2 entries in device manager?
Thanks again for your help,
Phil

Go back into the Device Manager and click on the view tab (on top) and check show hidden devices.
Now click on disk drives and note the color of the icon. Most likely, you have a mix of of light and dark icons. The dark is the current drives and the light are drives not attached. My reason for you looking at disk drives was to see the difference in color of icons.
Now, click on the Acronis Backup Archive Explorer and look at the icon colors. Do you have a mix of colors. If yes, you can use the uninstall option and uninistall the light colored one which is not being used.
At this time, the next thing Iwould try is to reinstall the version 9 over the top of the exist appliction. When you click on the install option, you may get a repair option. If you do, you can choose the repair option; otherwise you want a full install.
I don't know if this will help but it's a starting point.
To gather more information, if Ver 9 has a "files and folders" backup option, simulate doing a backup of a few files and see the TI can find your drives during this type of backup. This just a test and no actual backup is needed.

Hi Grover:
Thanks for all your help an insights. I've attached a picture of anything that said Acronis in Device Manager. They are both the same color, however.
I tried backing up a folder that was on my C:\ drive to my removable D:\ drive. Although, it said it was successful, when I tried to mount it, I got a message that there were no partitions to mount.
I tried reinstalling, but get the same message.
I went to Add/Remove programs, where there is a repair option, but got a message that the source could not be found (it's a downloaded file that I have). It gives me no option to browse for that file.
Any other ideas? And thank you again for sticking with this.

If I am understanding you correctly, Acronis DID see your drives for the files only backup. I am also understanding that your system disks are the same disks used when version 9 was operating properly.
This would be my approach which is very similar to what you had proposed with some changes.
1. With TrueImage closed, go into the Device Manager and uninstall/delete both entries for the Acronis explorer. Note the entries are NOT identical which indicates we have remnants of two different installs.
2. Go into your services (Start/Run services.msc or Ctrl-Alt-Del/processes and stop any and all services related to Acronis or TrueImage.
3. Go into the Add/remove programs and uninstall TrueImageHome.
4. Reboot into the version 9 Recovery CD.
5. Use the Restore function. Browse to one of your prior version 9 backups (prior to your computer repair) and checkmark only the track0/mbr. Restore only the single item (track0/mbr). When you get to the screen where you select the target disk (system disk), if you have a option, also choose to Recover Disk Signature but that may not be a choice on that version. If listed, it will appear in lower left of the target disk selection screen. Click Proceed to restore the mbr (and disk signature--if listed).
One of the Knowledge base articles indicated that your error could be associated with a bad MBR. Restoring an old mbr should not cause an issue but should there be an issue, we can recover by restoring a newer mbr from your most recent backup.
6. Check the system disk for disk errors. From a command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
a reboot will be necessary and this could take some time. You may want it to run overnight.
7. Reboot into Windows and re-install TrueImage9 (b-3854) from your downloaded installation file.
8. Reboot and try using TI and let us know the results.
Note: You will not need to install version 8 but you will need the version 8 serial number as part of the input when installing the version 9 upgrade. Version 8 & 9 serial numbers available from your Acronis registration page. These can be copied and pasted (control v) into the serial windows. I like to visit the registration page and copy each serial into the clipboard and then paste it into a text file so I can paste into the program from the text file without having to type the numbers.

Thanks again, Grover. I will give this a try. It may take a few days (as I'm getting a new computer tomorrow...which is why I need the backup), but I will get back to you with the results.
