True Image Home 2011 Clone of McAfee Endpoint Encrypted HDD

Thread needs solution

I'm running True Image Home 2011. I bought a new HDD, installed it in my laptop, and installed my old hard drive into my external eSATA enclosure. Now, I want to clone the old HDD to the new HDD. I booted into True Image using a USB thumb drive so that I was not running from the old HDD. Here are the steps leading up to where I am stuck. . .

Before I took img_0901 I unplugged the external (old) HDD to ensure that I was booting to the new internal HDD. Looks good, i'm prompted for my McAffee credentials.

At img_0902 I encounter the problem, "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: . . ." I have read:

Knowlege Base Article:
14666: Compatibility of Acronis Backup Software with McAfee Endpoint Protection
which offers the solution documented here: http://kb.acronis.com/content/1507

I am running Windows 7, and I have an installation CD. I follow these instructions per the knowledge base article:
"In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt and type the following:

Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot"

After completing the recommended steps (see img_0907) I reboot and am left with a blinking (img_0909) cursor (i.e. I no longer get the McAfee prompt for credentials). What do I need to do?

Thank you very much for your help!

I apologize that images 0903 - 0909 are rotated 180 degrees, I think they're still useable. . .

It looks to me like you had your original disk encrypted when you cloned it; is that correct? The picture img_0900 tends to imply that, but I'm not familiar with McAfee products so I'm not positive that's what it means. A further clue is in photos img_0895, img_0896, and img_0898 where there are red X symbols on the partition graphics. A red X means that TrueImage does not understand the formatting on the partition or that there are errors or bad sectors on the source disk. I presume that it's the former reason if the partitions were encrypted.

I would suggest the following. Put the source disk back into the PC and remove the clone. Boot the PC to check that everything still works from the original disk. Then use the McAfee software to unencrypt the disk. To rule out disk errors, also run a disk check from Windows on both partitions.

After doing this and verifying that there aren't any problems with the source disk, repeat the clone process exactly as you have described it. You should not need to do any of the repairs described in your first post. If successful, then use the McAfee software to re-encrypt your new disk.
