True Image Home 2011 not for use on XP?

Thread needs solution

I have a Dell Lattitude running XP SP3 and upgraded to TIH2011 on July 20. I experienced significant problems beginning with my first backup, extending over most of the next month. I finally became so frustrated I took the computer in for repair. I have had it back nearly a month and have had no problems, until today when I started TIH2011 for the first time to explore a backup made with True Image 8.0.937. After mounting the image, the system locked up completely forcing me to turn it off. Tried again with same result. When I try to repair or reinstall I receive a message from the OS/Microsoft saying that the software I am installing isn't licensed for use on XP and to STOP the installation. When I talked with support staff regarding my various problems back in July I was advised not to reinstall 8.0.937 because it is not supported by Acronis, but it would appear that the TIH2011 isn't supported by the OS! Any suggestions?

"LT",
Hello... I'm running XP-Pro SP-3 and 2010 v 7046 and it works, and well .. can't say about 2011, but thought that i would pass along what i do know ... Regards Fred

Linda,

I would say you are fighting with some leftover driver from your older version. You can chase it down by:
- uninstaling 2011,
- use the Acronis cleanup utility http://kb.acronis.com/content/14871
- reboot,
- use an uninstaller like Revo uninstaller to clean up remnants,
- remove any Acronis device from device manager
- reinstall 2011.
Before you tweak, remember to have a backup (you can produce one from the recovery CD).

I must admit I'm not too impressed with TIH2011: I hold it responsible for the hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in repair costs, down time and lost income during July and August. But I'll give the program one more try only because 8.0.937 performed flawlessly for many years.

BTW, I was told by support that the 2 versions could co-exist. Are you saying that is not the case? I do not currently have version 8 installed but am unable to uninstall 2011. Hopfully your suggestions will help with that.

I don't think v2011 will allow v8 to be installed. It is not advisable to have (even if it does allow it) to have two versions installed especially ones so distant in versions. V8 may well allow v2011 to install, but it still isn't advisable.

You haven't detailed what problems TIH was causing you.

Instead of exploring the v8 image try mounting it instead. As Pat L says the result you got from 'exploring' sounds like two drivers or snapman entries are still installed.

What build of 2011 are you using?

It would take several pages to describe all of the problems but I'll summarize the cascading spiral of events. They explain why I wish I'd never bought TIH2011 :-). The C:\ partition on this machine had 11% free. I wanted a current backup before installing a larger HD and purchased TIH2011 to replace the aging TIH8 thinking the online backup would provide added security. The backup to external disk seemed to succeed (it verified, but I never used it to restore) and I began the online backup. That proceeded very slowly but the docs said I could continue working. On about day 3 of the backup, I received an odd error while compiling a project for a client. Before long, I could no longer compile anything. I checked the event logs and found that disk i/o errors began as soon as the online backup did, and steadily increased in their severity. I stopped the online backup and planned to reformat the disk and restore. However, TIH2011 wouldn't restore, saying there wasn't enough free space. I bought a larger HD but the restore did not go smootly because of a separate Fat16 partition that caused problems with sizing. I spent 40 hours in chat sessions with tech support over the next week. At some point during an interactive session with them, and before the anti-virus could be reinstalled, the new disk became infected with malware. That required a trip to the repair shop. Three and a half weeks passed between the purchase of TIH2011 and the day I could finally do billable work again and most of that time was spent dealing with hardware problems. The system has worked flawlessly since--until I started TIH2011 to mount an image yesterday. The version is 6868 according to the downloaded file name....

Hello all:

I have a question about the Acronis Security Zone. I'm using Acronis TI Home 11 build 8101, and I created the ASZ in a 2GB partition, (now empty) that I had previously used for another purpose. I re-formatted it twice for good measure, to make sure all previous data was written over. After I created the ASZ, there was a 16MB partition left over. Windows Explorer says there is 4MB of data in it, but all I see is an empty Recycle Bin and a system volume folder which itself reads as empty.

Is there any reason not to merge this partition with one of its adjacent partitions? It did not end up contiguous with the ASZ partition, but I could merge it with C, or the separate partition that I use for documents and other saved files.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, you could merge that partition, but partitions operations are always a bit risky so make sure you backup the partition you will merge it with.

My situation is different but still in XP. I am running a Lenovo laptop with XP Pro and TIH 2011 Update 3 Build 6942. I use Acronis to clone my disks instead of a standard backup. However, in XP Pro Acronis drops out part way through and returns to Windows. My solution was to make a recovery disk and boot from it. TIH then runs in the Acronis enviornment and works fine for me.

Eddie,

If your computer is a Lenova/Thinkpad Laptop, you might be interested in the 3 postings.

Click on link #1 and look at the several items listed under #3-T.

Lenova/thinkpad Laptop is one of those brands which need to have the target disk be placed inside the computer before restoring or cloning due to their special head geometry.

If using a IBM docking station, that can often suffice as being inside the computer.

Yes, the recommended method is to use the TI Recovery CD when restoring the system disk or cloning.
