True Image Home 9.0, 11.0 and 2010 hang on windows XP
I have been using True Image Home on Windows XP for several years with no problems. Last week problems started with True Image Home 11.0 and the software would hang. Upon examination it would hang on a manual backup of files & folders on the screen to select files/folders after the next button was clicked. No error messages or anything. I had to kill true image with the task manager. I tried reinstalling 11.0 and it still hangs. I removed 11.0 and went back to 9.0 - same problem. I did a system restore to 3 weeks ago - the last time a backup was successfully run - and reinstalled 11.0 and it still hangs. I removed all of 9.0 and 11.0 and downloaded a trial version of True Image Home 2010, installed it and the same problem - hangs after selecting files/folders and pressing the next button.
I have attached the output of acronisreport in case that helps solve the problem.
What can I do to troubleshoot this problem?
Thans for the help
John

Sorry it took so long to reply to your questions, but I was out of town for easter.
I ran chkdsk on my c: drive and still hangs on selecting next on the files/folders selection window.
THe only change I can think of is that I added a network mounted drive. The drive is intended for backup operations.
What else can I try? Is there a list of services that must be running for True Image to operate? Over the years I have done some customization to improve my computer operation. Perhaps I am missing a service?
Thanks for the help

Upon additional testing I found a process which started up when I was clicking the next button - it was cdrecord2.exe. I did a search on the internet and found someone who had success with their backup after deleting this process. I tried deleting the process - after deleting it several times I found I cound manually select the backup archive location and then go back and select my sample files for backup and the backup actually ran.
So my next questions is - what is the cdrecord2.exe process and was it okay that I terminated it with the task manager?
thanks

John,
The cdrecord2.exe process is an Acronis tool that burns the TI rescue files to disk. Terminating it is OK, and in fact it shouldn't be running unless you have selected the media builder option.
It would appear that after you burnt a rescue CD, for some strange reason, the task handle wasn't released by Windows, or TI didn't ask for it to be released.

Ok, based on the input by Colin I tried removing the media builder portion of the True Image install - tried a backup and still hung with the cdrecord2 processes (by the way I had to terminate it 4 times before the backup would proceed). Then I went to the Common Files\Acronis\CDRecord folder and renamed the cdrecord2.exe file and reran the backup and what do you know -everything went smoothly for a trial backup.
So my question now is will the rename of the cdrecord2.exe file cause any trouble elsewhere in the application? What is the proper way to fix this issue (other than the rename)?
Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help

The thing is John, it shouldn't be auto running.
Check in MSCONFIG and see if it is part of the startup group, if it is untick it.
DO you have other disk burning software installed?

The only thing related to acronis in the startup group is TrueImageMonitor.exe and schedhlp.exe - nothing about cdrecord2.exe
The only disk burning software is Sonic and windows media player and those came with the computer and neither have had recent updates.
I found no reference cdrecord2 in the registry either.
ANy other suggestions?

Since your trial of 2010 either has or about to expire, you face a decision.
You have had several versions of TrueImage installed. It is possible that it is corrupted by residue in the registry. One option might be use a prior backup and restore the system back a usable error free state.
Then uninstall Trueimage and run a Acronis cleanup program. Then do a fresh install of whatever TrueImage program you intend to use.
I am assuming that you are using XP based on your use of prior versions of TI.
The only way you will know whether renaming CDRecord2 is to leave it renamed for a while and see if your burn software continues to work.
Perhaps Acronis support might offer some other suggestions.

Here is an interesting Knowledge Base article on third-party software used in True Image: http://kb.acronis.com/content/9480
I would imagine that cdrecord is used in the Bootable Media Builder to burn the CD, and as such, is totally uneeded, since this can easily be done outside of True Image,

I realize I'm coming to this party a little late, BUT...
I thought I'd share with you what I personally discovered the issue to be for me (which I suspect is the same issue the original poster was probably also experiencing):
A non-existent (or otherwise unavailable/unreachable (at the moment)) network drive (shared drive) that I happen to have used previously as the my backup file (archive) location.
For example: for me, I was troubleshooting an issue I had using an external USB drive for my backups, and so, for the time being, had been doing my backups to a network share on my other system. Once I had resolved my issue however, I simply unshared the drive on my other system, unplugged it, and then plugged it into my primary system.
But that previously used "backup location" was still in Acronis's list of MRU list of previously used filenames. Thus, as soon as I clicked the 'Next' button, it tried to build its list (tree) of backup locations for you to choose from (left side of dialog) but the particular network share (shared network drive) no longer existed! (And Windows is notorious for taking a fricking long time to time-out when accessing network shares)
I was able to quickly resolve the issue by simply deleting the following registry key:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Acronis\TrueImageHome\FileHistory
Note: you will lose your "previous" history, but for me that was no big deal. If you don't want to lose all of your history, you might try deleting just individual entries. For me I suspect it was my "\\Win7\FishBackup" entries (that no longer existed) that were causing the problem, but I went ahead and deleted the entire key anyway. YMMV.
I hope this information is helpful to others experiencing the same issue, and I hope it prods Acronis to make an effort to try and override Microsoft's unreasonable time-out settings and automatically remove entries from their history list for locations which appear to no longer be available.
