The true image ico file has disappeared. How do I restore it.

Hi William, you likely need to rebuild the "icon cache" in windows. Go to this website:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

Download the bat file (Option 1) and run it. Before you run it, be sure to end anything else you have running - because you need to restart the PC. Whenever I've lost an icon, this brings it right back - I hope it works for you too.
