True Image not having exclusive access
not sure of the wording it said
I have tried, all day yesterday, and got no where. It took 5 hours the first time, only to get a message that "Acronis true image failed because it did not have exclussive access" or something like that. I tried different settings, i tried different targets for the back up, nothing worked. For months it has worked perfectly fine, i have added no new software in over a year and it worked fine last month. I even tried deleteing the back up files and starting again with a new full backup (nothing worked). I am backing up (as i always have) to 2TB WD external drive, my pc hard drive is only 1TB and only has 468GB used. I am super frustrated.
Further info- I had no other programs running, even disabled my antivirus. I even went into task manage and disabled anything non-essential in the background. Help please.
(oh and windows 10 on PC) Acronis True Image 15 build 6613 - it says up to date)

John, welcome to these user forums.
Are you running Acronis from an Administrator account, or using Run as Administrator when running it?
Please download a copy of the MVP Log Viewer (link in my signature below) and check what messages are being shown in your task log files for this issue? Post copies of the logs if you need help in reading them/

I always run from the administrator account, so that is not it, and it is the same drive i always used. I did however just update to Acronis True Image 2017 this morning and it appears that using that, and creating a new backup worked. Only problem i have is that i can't remove the old backup listing in the screen (the old backup files got deleted when i told it to delete the old backup, but it never deleted the old scheme (it just hung there saying deleting - as i said, it did delete the files but did not remove it from the home screen of True Image). I created an entirely new backup scheme (just let it use all defaults) and that worked. Any idea how to remove the old listing - the old true image (2015) had a 'remove" option as well as a delete, 2017 seems to have removed that option.
thanks for the quick response on the initial problem though, i wish i did know why it didnt work with a program i have relied on for two years (saving to the same external drive) but it took an upgrade to get it to work again.

John, there can be problems associated with upgrading across multiple different versions of ATIH assuming that you may have previously upgraded to ATIH 2015 from an earlier version. This is covered in the ATIH 2017 FAQ Document in the left column of the forum where it has the following statement.
If you already have Acronis True Image 2016 or Acronis True Image 2015 installed, there is no need to remove the old version and reinstall the software. Start the installation file of Acronis True Image 2017 and install the product. After upgrade, create a new bootable media.
If you already have Acronis True Image 2014 or older versions, you need to delete these first and then install Acronis True Image 2017.
To remove the orphaned backup task you will need to take a slightly different approach if it isn't being deleted from the GUI directly.
In Explorer, go to C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts and open each of the .TIS files you find there in Notepad - these are XML text files and they contain the task configuration details. The name of the task is near the top of the file inside <display> my task name </display> brackets.
You can delete the .TIS file(s) associated with the orphaned task and they will then disappear from the GUI.
Note: best to have the GUI closed when you do this.

Steve's advice should get you going.
However, I wanted to point out that simply logging in with an admin account is not sufficient to ensure the necessary privileges for a good installation. There are many files, folders and/or settings that even an adminisrator cannot gain access to, without first taking ownership of them and then granting themselves permissions. Likewise, there are commands that even an administrator cannot run, simply by being logged in as admin.
This is why you should always right-click and "run as administrator" to install or remove software - to ensure that you give it the extra admin rights it needs for some of those more OS integrated files, folders and services.
As a quick test to verify this point, while logged in with an admin account, open up a command prompt, just by double clicking on it. Note at the top of the window it says "command prompt".
Now type in
nbtstat -R <enter>
Failed to Purge the NBT Remote Cache Table.
It fails because of a lack of permissions. Now, close command prompt by right clicking and selecting the option to specifically "run as administrator. Note at th top of the window it says "Administrator: command prompt"
nbtstat -R <enter>
Successful purge and preload of the NBT Remote Cache Name Table.
It is successful, because of the extra administrative privileges.

Thanks Guys.
As i said, i have it working now that it is 2017 .. might have been that something got corrupted in the 2015 version. I have no idea. I did nothing different when i had the problem than i ever did before when it worked, and after installing the 2017 version (the upgrade negated having to uninstall the 2015 version), i did the same thing i always did and this time it worked.
I was probably not clear though on the minor thing i am trying to fix now. I am trying to remove an old listing from the main page when i boot up the program (see attached jpg file.) i am want to remove the one circled in red from the list but there does not seem to be a "remove" function like there was in the 2015 version ... (delete did not remove it from the listing).

Steve's note above should help ensure that gets removed from the console if it's not playing nice through the regular means of removing it.
