True Immage

Thread needs solution

Hello.
Because I can not get an answer to my request for help via e-mail, I put the question here and hope for an answer.
I use True Image 2015 and wants to make an immage from my 1T byte HD drive in my Win 8.1PC. For that Immage I want to use a 3 Terabyte ext.USB HDrive. which other files are stored.
I tried this already with a ext. 1 Tbyte USB HD, the image file was approximately 300Gbyte. Then I also have some media files stored in a separate folder.
After that the drive was no longer accessable by my browser and got an error message;
"Device is used by another application."
May only the image file on the HD? Hopefully not!
If it is allowed, is it better to have an extra Partion on the ext. 3Tbyte HD to create, e.g. 1 Tbyte big?
Rather, I would only create an additional Image-Map.
If I wants to make a new immage,(after any major change to C:) again old images can then remain? Something like the restore points under Windows XP.
In my example is an image 300Gbyte big, so I can only save 1 Tbyte 3 images!
Will be stored only the changes?

How do you do that?

Yes, you can store several images on a USB disk. For all intent and purposes, TIB files are files like any other. No need for a special partition (in fact, I believe there is no need for the Acronis Secure Zone either in most cases). When you run your backup again, ATI will create a new image, and won't delete previous ones, unless you have set retention rules.
Since you first full backup is 300GB, you can consider running incremental or differential backups. Incremental are the most economical space-wise, while differentials achieve a good compromise between flexibility and space savings.
If you create a backup task that creates a new full backup after N incrementals, you can instruct ATI to keep only a limited number of backup chains (a chain is the full plus its N incrementals).
Remember that ATI will always create a new full BEFORE deleting an existing chain.
So if your first chain of full+N incremental is 900GB, and you have asked ATI to keep only 1 chain, you are out of luck on a 1TB disk, since you first need 300GB to create your new full, before ATI deletes the 900GB.
In general, make N so that your last full validated backup is never too old for you to go back to if it was your last best option.
