Trueimage 2010 crashes - Windows 7 - External USB 2,5" Harddisk

Thread needs solution

(English Text below...)

Guten Tag

Gruss
Uwe

Hi

I have a problem with Acronis TrueImage 2010, and Windows 7.
I want to backup a PC, with an external 2.5 " usb hard drive connected (Samsung 640MB). The hard disk is always on. As soon as I start TrueImage backup, TrueImage either crashes or hangs and I must kill the program via the TaskManager.

The following approach will not work:
1. Start TrueImage and select "Backup"
2. TrueImage crashes or hangs

The following approach works:
1. Remove External hard drive
2. Start TrueImage and select "Backup"
3. Connect External hard drive
4. Select Target for backups (external hard drive select)
5. Save as normal

Somehow TrueImage 2010 seems to have a problem with the external USB hard disk. The problem is reproducible with various external Samsung 2.5 "hard disks and on different PC's wid Windows 7 and TI 2010 (latest release)

Any hints?
Regards
Uwe

I have exactly the same problem with the Samsung S2 disc; if the disc is plugged in, TI 2010 (last build) crashes at starting the program; if i plug in the disc after program start, i am able to save images to the disc drive, but when i try to save a Data Backup to the disc, TI crashes.

Furthermore if you try to start TI 2010 from the startup boot CD (both types, the one generated from the media builder and the last build. iso file from the website) Acronis crushes; it works only if you do not plug in the Samsung S2 disc, so you can only access the built in hard drive making the program quite useless.

Interestingly, the last build of TI 2009 at least can make data backup to the disc, but the boot media crushes too.

This problems do not exist with another external usb disc from Maxtor.

So the Samsung S2 disc is quite useless as backup disc for acronis, because one cannot access system images from the boot media.

Another point: This disc (formatted NTFS or FAT32) is recognized only by the Win 7 disc console without problems, whereas DD10 and Easeus partition manager give errors (DD10 :"no file system, no partition"; Easeus : "unsupported disc"); my maxtor disc is recognized correctly by both programs. It is however not possible, to save a win 7 system image to the disc by the win 7 backup program.

So it seems to be a special problem of the Samsung USB Contoller used in this discs?
I will try to return this disc, it would be great to have some list of compatible external usb drives on the knowledge base.

Dwino

Hi, there is obviously an incompatibility between TrueImage 2010 and the Samsung S2 Harddisk series.

Dear Acronis crew: Could you please fix this issue?

Kind regards

Uwe

Then again it could be a firmware issue with the Samsung S2 drive. I have a nice Seagate 120GB IDE drive which works perfectly with everything if it is installed inside my computer, but it also is the only drive I have which fails to work properly when installed into either of my external USB2 enclosures. Its a firmware/hardware issue with the drive itself, and no fix is available from Seagate.

I currently have problems too with the samsung s2 hard drive, since 3 weeks ago when the problem was identified and none solution has been presented by Acronis, my hardware provider ask me for a compatible usb hard disk to change my Samsung S2 hard drive, but I cant find any, even asking for it on chat support.. always the same answer: try installing las snapapi.exe...

regards

This may not be your problem, but it does relate to usb drives. Noticed it in another thread and bookmarked it in case it showed since I have nvidia chipset. You might want to read over it but I wouldn't install it unless it does prove to be related:

"You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972

I have the same problems with my 640MB 2.5" HD of Samsung with Acronis True Image Home 2010.

There are no fix at the moment! I hope Acronis/Samsung will fix this incompatibility.

Mine crashes if I try to backup via esata to an external 1 TB Toshiba drive OR via USB to an HP 1 TB drive. Either they are both Samsung guts and it effects both Esata and USB, OR it not just a Samsung problem. Apparently the problem isn't as "rare" as Acronis would like us to believe. Will try installing the fix tonoght. Sorta wish I had just stayed with the old program. It always worked.

I'm able to backup to and restore from a Samsung HD103SJ 1Tb drive sitting in a Thermaltake dock and connected via eSata. So as someone said, it may be just a firmware problem.
The backup was from within Windows and the restore was via the rescue CD - ver. 2010 build 5055.
