Trueimage succesful recovery, but windows10 locked! aka The operation was successful , but the patient died!

Thread needs solution

I have acronis 15, running on windows 10. Some user files were corrupted, but computer did start. Unwisely, i used acronis to  retrieve image. 3 hours later it said it was succesful, However the computer refuses to boot. I tried the techniques suggested online, using SFC, bootrec, chkdsk....didnt work.  I tried inserting a windows 10 recovery disk but that simply gets me back to troubleshoot , and no farther. I cant even do a fresh install with it. Suggestions appreciated deeply!

most frustrating is that i tried to contact support, but apparently they arent helping after one year

Charles, welcome to these User Forums.

What type of backup image do you have, that you restored to your Windows 10 computer?
Was this a full disks & partitions backup, which includes all hidden/system partitions?

How does/did you Windows 10 system boot?
Was this a Legacy system (BIOS, MBR) or was it a UEFI system (possibly with Secure Boot, GPT)?

How did you perform the Restore of your backup image to this computer?
Was this done from within Windows using the ATIH 2015 application which then required a reboot to complete?
Or did you boot from the Acronis Rescue Media to do the Restore (Highly recommended)?
If the latter, did you boot the Rescue Media in the same way as your Windows OS uses?

Did you restore the backup image back to the same disk drive where Windows was booting from?

Ty so much for responding.

Full back up. Bios

Funny you should mention. The first time I restored from computer [which I had thought preferable as it had updated to windows 10] it was not successful. However the computer locked up, so I had to use the acronis 15 CD. Apparently this was successful- but windows is still locked!

Yes to same drive. I only have one, partitioned for lenovo utilities which I can't access either

(from a phablet.....?)

Charles, please see topic: Recovery from backup fails to boot which also deals with a similar issue where the drive is locked due to the system being in a hybrid sleep state when the restore was performed.  In particular, the post from Enchantech copied below:

What error message do you get during the boot process?  Is it "Inaccesable boot device"?  If yes you might try allowing the Windows repair to run again.  In repair, select Troubleshooting, then select Startup Settings, then Restart.  Upon restart choose option 4 Boot Safe Mode.  If boot succeeds to Windows desktop then click on the power button and select restart.  PC should boot normally.

tx for response.

the error message. is not saying inaccessible.  its saying:

diagnosing ...attempting repair....The drive where where windows is installed is locked. Unlock Drive and start again.

Most of time i cant even get into safe mode. The one time i think i did,it just went back to the above error message. As i said i seem unable even to use recovery disk to reinstall windows. Seems something is caught just before that instruction.

so frustrating

Charles, I believe that this is still the same issue for the topic I referenced above, that also deals with a locked Windows drive, as per the further post from Enchantech in that topic.

The locked drive issue is due to Windows Fast Start feature. Basically fast start is a hybrid sleep mode. Because it writes data to hyberfil when you shutdown a Windows 10 PC this data is saved to disk by hiberfil.sys.  When you turn on your computer again the data is read from the disk and loaded in memory for a faster start.  In this state Windows locks the drive to prevent data corruption.

That's all fine except when you perform a low level disk function like a backup you are  backing up the drive in this locked state.   To unlock the drive a restart of the computer is what is needed.   This is a different function than a reboot.   Performing the solution I offered if you can in fact start the computer in Safe Mode allows you to restart it and solves the locked drive issue.

In reply to by truwrikodrorow…

Sorry yes i take your point.

however i dont seem able to start in safe mode. I tried with command options to force it to. Or if it did, it goes into the same series of  screens ...the difference perhaps being that troubleshoot offers the option of going into start options, which leads again to the same loop...

Charles, if you can get to a Windows Command prompt window, then try to change to your OS drive (hopefully still shown as C: but double-check in case drive letters have changed), then see if you can delete the hiberfil.sys hibernation file.  Note: this is normally a Hidden/System file so you will need to use the Attrib command to remove these flags.

If this doesn't work or isn't allowed, then you may need to do this from such as a Linux boot CD or USB stick.  This is assuming that you have another PC where you could create such media.

so here i show im a newbie.

the windows 32 is showing x:\ which  is where the boot drive

i changed to c but nothing seems there. i tired to see where the os is by typing diskpart.exe but nothing comes up.

how to do this?

tx

In reply to by truwrikodrorow…

to clarify, if this helps, running logicaldisk, i come up with C (system drv) D (no label) E (no file system) F (lenovo recovery) G (no label) H (no label) X (boot)

tx

apologies Steve. cracked it at last.

the X Directory has Program Files, Program files x86,sources, users,  windows,offlinerecenvtrace/

I could not however locate hiberfil,

under x:\dir hiberfil.sys it says not found , volume is boot

even using x:\> hiberfil.sys, nothing.

ty.J

Charles, the X: drive is normally the boot media that you are using to launch the command prompt, i.e. Windows DVD or Repair disc, Acronis WinPE boot media etc.

If you are seeing the C: drive as empty, then this would suggest that the restore / recovery to that drive was not successful.

the C Drive is showing MFGSTAT, preboot, Recovery, tvtos

the X Drive is showing Program Files, Program files x86,sources, users,  windows,offlinerecenvtrace/.

I dont have any CD in it at moment. Does the X contain those directories if no CD?

.The computer was running before only user data was corrupted. To confirm you are saying that after running True image,   and Acronis then failed to load. the new ? I shall rerun the Acronis now , but i believe the second time it said it was successful.

ty

Charles, this seems to be getting stranger!  What are the sizes of the partitions you are seeing for these drive letters?

Seeing such as preboot, recovery on your C: drive would suggest that this may be a Recovery partition which are normally around 450MB in size, not your actual OS partition.

Seeing sources on your X: drive - this is not normally found on a normal Windows 10 OS partition?

What are you booted from when you are seeing these files / folders when you cannot boot into Windows 10?

In reply to by truwrikodrorow…

strange is not a word i like! Result is better!

if i dont use any cd then it goes into diagnosing , disk repair, then that locked drive error, then into troubleshoot, & i use command prompt option to see this stuff.

i suppose acronis could have partially wiped stuff first, or it was partially successful?!

when acronis has finished ill try to see. is there a cmd showing all disk partition sizes at once?

J

(not from phablet, not from kids laptop, from kindle...)

Charles, you should be able to use DISKPART to see the partition sizes as shown below:

DISKPART> list disk

Tx.

I am half way thru recovery, 1hr. 30min still to go.

i havent ticked shut down or restart. If recovery  successful, how would you suggest i continue?

(kids laptop)

Can only suggest having a browse of the disk partitions while still in the ATIH Rescue Media by simulating as if you were going to do a Files & Folders backup and check to see if everything is looking as you would expect it to?

See the following screen shots taken from one of my computers running Windows 10 as viewed from the Acronis Rescue Media (WinPE version), but showing how the partitions look.

capture_001_12072017_160657.jpg

In the above image, my Local Disk (C:) is the Windows 10 OS drive, hence the folders shown in the right panel which are similar to the Boot (X:) drive shown, which is the WinPE version of the OS being run from the Rescue Media (shown also as WinPE (D:).

capture_002_12072017_160708.jpg

Above is the detail of the Boot X: drive contents which is a lot shorter than the real Win 10 OS drive.

capture_003_12072017_160718.jpg

The display for the WinPE D: drive is the same as viewing the Rescue Media from Windows Explorer on a booted Windows (the Capture folder was created by me to hold these images as captured from the booted media - using the MVP Custom ATI WinPE media).

TY for being so comprehensive.

So,teh backup apparently succesfully installed. However it did not reboot successfully.Same locked etc.

My back up image is circa 350gb, seems right as original data pix etc was about 450gb, hard drive a little more than that, and i presume some compression.

I cannot find any files in the C (or F as acronis labels it). Perhaps because locked? Or.....no idea......The partition shows over 400gb. Lenovo is detailed as is Boot.

At this point i have no idea . How can i even reinstall windows with a completely fresh build...i have files backed up htough of course programs will be a pain.?

tx again...Acronis owes u a lot! Amazing how quickly a small business dependent upon documents can be halted.

Charles, do you have a spare 500GB (or larger) disk drive that you could use to replace the current problem drive?  If so, then try restoring your full disk backup image to that spare drive and then look again at the contents of the large 453GB OS partition.

The alternative would seem to be wiping the whole 500GB drive by using DISKPART again, but after selecting your DISK 0 (problem OS drive) then use the CLEAN command which will wipe the drive.

See webpage: DiskPart Command-Line Options (this was written for older versions of Windows but is still relevant for Windows 10).

See also webpage: How to Erase a Disk using Diskpart Clean Command in Windows 10

This would be the equivalent of doing a bare-metal recovery to a new disk drive.

Charles, right at the start of our conversation in this topic, I wrote:

Was this a full disks & partitions backup, which includes all hidden/system partitions?

If you are going to wipe the drive, then you need an Acronis backup image (full disk & partitions) to use to Recover / Restore to the wiped drive by booting from the Acronis Rescue media to do this.

Not sure where you comment about 'use clone again' comes from as I do not recall any mention of cloning in this topic?

A Windows recovery CD will not reinstall Windows 10 unless by this you mean a Windows 10 installation DVD (or USB memory stick) but using this will give you a vanilla Windows 10 OS with no additional programs installed.

Apologies, meant image.

I'll try a cronies again but if it fails again needs must and I don't want to buy another laptop. But I'll have to buy an installation disc I guess.

You've been very kind. I don't understand why acronis doesn't warn people or at least help in catastrophic situations.

Charles, you shouldn't need to initialise the disk.  The choice of MBR or GPT really depends on what the disk is currently set to, but given your partition list didn't show an EFI partition, I would expect it to be MBR as GPT requires an EFI BIOS.

You shouldn't need to buy a Windows 10 installation disk - you can use the Microsoft Media Creation tool to create this yourself on either a DVD or a USB memory stick - I did this several times myself recently.

Hi Steve I did anyway using mbr. At this point on booting simply hung.

Then I did true image again. Again successful. Same locked drive.!

Using Diskpart

G repair disc

C system drv  nfts 1200 healthy

D                                 raw   453 gb bealthy

E  Lenovo recovery nfts 10gb healthy

F                 nfts 486mb healthy hidden

H   nfts removable 14 gb   healthy

I'm not sure Raw is new or an improvement or explains why windows locked. Do I give up? Or does this help you?

TX.

Ps  understood re Microsoft. Ty

Charles, at this point in time, I would suggest a sideways approach to get past the locked drive!

Download & create the Windows 10 install media (use the link I gave earlier).

Do an initial clean install of Windows 10 and let it wipe the drive clean when doing it.

Once you get back to a booting version of Windows, then retry booting from the Acronis Rescue Media and restore back your disk backup image.

Hi

Just an update.

I got teh windows 64 pro to reinstall from scratch after a small issue, acronis again destroyed, then did it again. This time i am simply using my back up files, and whatever programs i dont have any longer, ill have to replace. Windows 2007 is overrated anyway!

A big ty for your assistance. A big thumbs down to acronis. Whats the point??!!

Sorry to hear that you have been unable to recover your Acronis backup image and are having to reinstall your programs and get back your data the hard way round.  I hope you get back to where you need to be as quickly as possible with minimal loss of programs / data.
