Try & Decide (Vista and scheduled defragging)

Thread needs solution

What's the deal? When T&D starts, you are advised not to run disk utilities as long as Try Mode is active. I think defrag.msc and chkdsk are mentioned. OK, I won't use them. What about defrag.exe, though? In Vista it's set to auto-run on a fixed schedule. Do I need to deactivate it, or does Try & Decide handle it in the background?

It would be nice if the answer were included in the T&D warning, in future editions.

If you're leaving T&D enabled for long periods of time, you should disable the auto-defrag. In any case, there is no benefit of a defrag when T&D is running and it may cause serious problems.

From the TI 2010 manual:

In addition, you must not use the Try&Decide mode and disk defragmentation or disk error checking utilities simultaneously, because this can irreparably corrupt the file system, as well as make the system disk unbootable.
