Try&Decide - Restart stops with connected USB mass storage

Thread needs solution

Try&Decide is a very useful tool. After an installation of a new software it is quite normal to be asked to restart the computer. It is very annoying, however, that during the boot the PC hangs after the message “loading the recovery manager” and permanent activity on my Maxtor Basics USB Desktop can be observed. Only after removing this device the boot continues and Windows started with the suggestion to begin in safe mode. Following this advice (a normal start repeats the hanging) and restarting the PC again now immediately the Acronis window appears with the options to continue with Try&Decide or ignore the changes.

That whole behavior is the reason why I have connected my USB mass storage device now in the front USB slot to be able to remove it more easily. I would prefer the rear slot to have two free USB slots in the front panel.

I suspect that the interaction of Acronis TIH 2010 with the Maxtor Basics USB Desktop is involved. BTW this is the storage device that Acronis is using for backups by default.

Acronis Try&Decide and USB bootable device - pre-Windows Environment Error

If Try&Decide is protecting System Disc, then connected USB bootable device does problem. Reboot comes in time when Windows should loaded, after user selected Continue, in condition when USB bootable device was connected to computer before booting begin.
For example, just sufficient is that the external USB bootable device was detected by BIOS, before user enter password to BIOS and disconnet USB bootable device.

Tested on Acer Aspire 2920Z notebook with devices:

  • Notebook internal multi-card reader "Realtek" (solution: remove SD/MMC/MS/xD card)</LI>
  • WD Passport</LI>
  • WD My Passport Essential</LI>
  • A Data Rubber disk JOGR

Non-bootable devices works correctly, do not cause problem. For example: Logitech speaker, Logitch wireless mouse, Vodafone/Huawei modem (probably only without microSD card), bluetooth adapter.

Acronis Try&Decide and USB bootable device - Windows Reboot Error (BSOD)

If Try&Decide is protecting computer (I do not have tested that error is also occured when only Non-System Disc is protected), user restarts computer, Try&Decide still continues at work (user selected Continue in Try&Decide pre-Windows Environment) and new USB bootable devices is connected (whenever) before user logon to user's profile, then after reboot command (from users selection's screen or from loaded user's profile) BSOD will come. In this time (ATIH 2011.5519 Eng at Windows Vista HP, SP2, 32bits) two different stop error I know

BSOD - STOP: 0xe0bf000f (0x854B1609, 0x03A9381F, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
BSOD - STOP: 0xe0bf000a (0x854B1609, 0x03A937A5, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Note: Difference is probably in relation of function ReadyBoost. I think that from time to time is corrupted cache "ReadyBoost.sfcache" due to pervious BSOD error during my test.

Another aspect I found, is that if user connect USB bootable device and want to start Acronis Try&Decide function, then Acronis True Image GUI (Main Environment) stop responds, but this function starts and is normaly avalable after hard-reset or off of computer. User is able to select continue and use computer with Try&Decide function.
