Unable to clone to USB connected Hard Drive

Thread needs solution

I have both True Image 2009 and 2012. Neither package is allowing me to clone my installed hard drive (c & d partitions) to an external USB connected hard drive. Both packages can see the USB connected drive ant its particulars are correct. I can select my installed hard drive as the source drive, but when it asking for the destination drive the USB drive is greyed out. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

As a followup ... the HD that is connected by an external USB is a 320GB WD connected to an XP Home Premium system. The HD was created by a True Image 2009 clone process under Vista Home Premium in 2010 as a clone of that systems hard disk. It has 4 partitions on it that I intend to trash/delete/overwrite. While I can see the contents of the HD, in XP's Windows Explorer, I am unable to delete any of the folders or files on it via Windows Explorer (i.e. the delete option does not appear under the File tab in Windows Explorer) ... which leads me to think that it has somehow become a Read Only HD. In fact, every folder and file that was written to the HD by the True Image 2009 clone process is marked as Read Only. Is there a simple means of removing the Read Only flag on all the folders and files .. or should I simply delete the partitions and reformat the HD and then proceed ahead with the clone process.
