unable to create

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I'm having to the darnest time trying to figure out the best way to create a image of my Windows 7 laptop. For the life of me I have been unable to sucessfully do it. Once I create it, the restore usually fails, with blue screening at bootup.

Can someone offer me the right directions to go it? I've looked online but can't seem to find out what is the BEST way to get a image created with windows 7.

Thanks

Hello Ron
Are you actually using True Image and if so which version. Only TI2010 will work with Win7.
What are you backing up to and if the backup itself appears to work can you perform a validation on it successfully.
You say you try to restore it, how are you trying to do the restore? You should be using a TI boot (rescue) disk to do this.

In the interim until we understand your problem better you could use the built in Windows 7 backup to create an image of your drive. Start-->Control Panel-->Backup and Restore.

Thanks for the response. I am using True Image Home 2010 build 7.046. I would like to create an image of my computer system and back it up to an external hard drive. So if the hard drive crashed I'll be able to restore to ANY size drive. I am booting with the resuce CD. I'm able to pick the primay drive then whenever it ask for the destination drive both are grayed out. Are there any written documentation on how to do this? Remember Ghost how easy it was.. click click click.. and your image was created...why isn't acronis like this???? Thanks for your help

Thanks I tried using the windows version but I ran into problems whenever I tried to use a different drive size to restore...

Ron - take a look at my post (http://forum.acronis.com/forum/10587) and see if it resolves your issue.

Hello all,

bin, thomasjk: thanks for your help.

Ron, let me assist you.

There are several reasons that may prevent you from making a backup to your external drive and the first one is file system errors on the source or destination drives, so I may suggest you to check them for errors:

  • Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd);
  • Enter the command:

    chkdsk DISK: /r

where DISK is the drive letter of the partition you need to check. Please note that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

The other reason is that your source drive is too big to fit onto a destination one.

Anyway, please check the disks for errors and try to back up again. If the issue still persists, please collect Acronis Report with the external drive plugged in and attach it to your reply to this thread.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Hello,,, thanks for the comment. I have previously scanned for errors and have even ran the defrag for good measure. Maybe I'm not being clear because I've tried every since the product (2010) came out to complete this successfully. The only way that I was able to do it successfully was to pull the drive out of the laptop and copy the image from one drive to another side by side using my desktop. This took more effort and it didn't yield me what I want to accomplish. I would like to be able to boot with the CD, create the image and restore it to any drive that has enough room. Am I missing something? Also is there a link on the Acronis website that would tell me exactly how to do this? By the way...why doesn't Acronis use the veribage "create image" I'm assuming "backup entire drive" is the same thing...This is very confusing for the novice.... Thanks for you help.
