Unable to create volume snapshot (0x70021) - Volume is already locked
I have a problem with the german version from Acronis True Image Home (Version 11, Build 8105), on a computer with a 750 GB disk and four partitions, where TI worked for several year´s without problems. Since 1-2 weeks, creating image fails with the above message. It seems that the volumes (despite of C: D: E: F:) are locked (e.g. the Snapshot-Modus is still active) and cannot be activated again.
I always get the error-messages: "Unable to create volume snapshot (0x70021)", "Volume Snapshot: Erstellen fehlgeschlagen. (0x10C449)" which says creation did not succeed, "Bereits gesperrt (0x9)" which says already locked ...
In a similar way refuses a "chkdsk /f" to work: "Das aktuelle Laufwerk kann nicht gesperrt werden. CHKDSK kann nicht ausgeführt werden, da das Volume von einem anderen Prozess verwendet wird. Die Bereitstellung des Volumes muss zuerst aufgehoben werden." which means: Can not lock the drive because it´s in use from another process. First the provision must be stopped ...
Question 1: Could these Lock result in a stopped / crashed TI-Backup?
Question 2: Could the Lock result in usage of another Acronis-Tool, which moves partitions from Advanced-Formatted WesternDigital Drives to 4KB Boundarys to improve Performance (1-2 Weeks before, I bought a new 2 GB Disk, and used this tool for moving the both 1 GB partitions, but I asumed, this would have no effect on internal non-WD Disk´s; I still hope, this assumption is right)
Question 3: The main question: In which way I can remove this Lock, without loosing data which have been written meanwhile ... ?
What I wounder about: with a PE-Boot-CD the Image-Creation did work, so it should not be a statical lock. But what - for heaven´s sake - should lock the disk´s when running WIN-XP? The Acronis-Tool is deinstalled, and I hope there are no SW parts left on disk. Neither installing the new Snap-API.DLL, nor the Reinstallation of TI did solve the problem.
Who can help?
With regards,
Michael

I am suddenly having the exact same problem! After using Acronis Home 11 for well over a year without a single issue, without explanation, TI stumbles while creating the image on drive D (data only) saying "Unable to create volume snapshot (0x70021):"
I have followed the suggestions on other threads by upgrading to the newest SnapAPI, have run CHKDSK and even SFC /Scannow. None of this has made a difference!
Does ANYONE have a possible solution? I'm running a Dell Vostro 400 with XP Pro. All updates. Thank you.

I have also suddenly begun to have this error. I have used Acronis for well over a year to make images of customer drives off an Esata dock. I then push the image onto the new drive for the client, and have a temporary backup in case the drive dies early (which sadly, some drives do).
When I tried to do this last month, i suddenly got the error that Acronis couldn't lock the external drive. I haven't recently updated the drivers for the Jmicron 36X so the controller hasn't changed, nor have I updated the Acronis software. There must be some recent Windows patch that is causing this new error.
I CAN copy the drive if I use a sector by sector copy, but this takes up MUCH more room and is therefore slower. I also then have to run the extra step of expanding the new volume manually once it's imaged onto the new drive. At least this method works, but its frustrating that it's necessary.
Hardware/Software:
Windows 7 Pro x64
BlackX eSata dock
Jmicron JMB36X controller with 1.17.58.0 driver
(windows had 2 drivers listed for the controller, both with different revisions. I uninstalled the controller driver, deleted the driver file, and will reinstall and reboot. If that fixes the issue, I'll report back)

EDIT: No luck. Acronis is still unable to 'lock' the drive and create a successful backup in any mode besides sector by sector. Acronis.. any help here?

Hello all,
Thank you for posting. I will definitely help you.
Volume snapshot errors are usually caused by errors on the hard drive or a malfunction of the Acronis low-level drivers that are in charge of hard drive operations.
Please check this article for the solution and if it does not help, please get back to me with these 2 reports:
1. AcronisInfo.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thank you.

Hello Owen,
Thank you very much for the private message with the diagnostic information.
Unfortunately, according to it you are using Acronis True Image 11 Home on a Windows 7 machine, which we do not support. You can always upgrade to Acronis True Image 2011 Home for half the price.
If you have additional questions, please let me know.
Thank you.
