I don't have a clue why my tib file won't open. .. except, Acronis originally looked for it in G: and it was in H:... I found two tib backups and tried to "recover files" but they would not open.

Joseph,

Need some more information to go on.

How are your trying to open the .tib files (Acronis Gui, windows file explorer, recovery media...)

What happens when you try to open them up... nothing, an error, a warning that can't find version 1 or can't find multiple versions. If you manually moved, deleted or renamed backups in Windows, this is sure way to cause this issue and you will want to "validate" the backup and either point the missing files to where they were moved or "delete" them when prompted if they no longer exist. Alternatively, make sure your drive letter has not changed from what it was set originally when teh backup was created (see below for my response to Paol).  There is also a possible fix if the .tibs are there and nothing happens when you double click on them or if it says please locate the last volume:  https://forum.acronis.com/forum/117232#comment-359062  .  Alternatively, re-running the installer and selecting the option to "repair" the install can solve issues as well. It's important to always install any application by right clicking on the installer and selecting the option to "run as administrator"... even if you're logged in with an admin account.  This ensures that Windows gives the installer full administrative privileges which may be otherwise reduced slightly because of UAC security.

Paol,

It sounds like Windows reasigned your drive letter automatically to something other than what you set it up as originally.  This is not uncommon in Windows as Windows will assign a new drive letter for a drive if the one it previously used is already in use (happens when you have mutlipe UsB drives plugged in at the same time - or a phone can mount as a drive letter too). It may help to manually assign a drive letter further down the alphabet (for instance M) so that Windows does not do this again.  If/when Windows assigns your backup drive (or source drive) a new letter, acronis will not function for that backup until you go in and re-pick the source/destination with the newly assigned drive letter.  This behavior is changed in 2017 and acronis will function if the same disk receives a new drive letter, but does not work this way in 2016 and earlier versions.

This is for Win7, but applies to Win 7 - 10.

Do you have an external USB hard drive or flash drive that you use frequently for backups or for use with applications? Every time you plug it in you may get a different drive letter for that drive.

There is a way to assign a static drive letter to an external USB drive so you always get the same drive letter for that drive...
