unable to open(initialize) computer

Thread needs solution

Have had TI on an XP system for some time and worked well. Suddenly I get the error "unable to open(initialize) computer". I've uninstalled and cleaned TI from system and reinstalled a couple of times with the same results. Would appreciate any assistance. Thanks

Hello Norman,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

Please make sure that you are using the latest build of Acronis True Image Home (#9796).

You can check it navigating mouse cursor to upper line of the program then press ALT + left mouse button -> Help -> About

If the build number differs from the latest one, please download and install the latest build. You can learn more on how to download the latest build here. Please uninstall the previous build by means of Acronis
Cleanup utility, reboot the computer and install build #9796 from the scratch.

If this doesn't help, please let me know about it via PMs.

Thank you.

Hi Oleg

My company is Acronis reseler. One of my customer have the same problem. I cannot advice them to use latest build because he have polish version of ATIH 2009 and there is only one polish build of this product avaliable. I send this problem to support team.

Hello Martinez,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

To resolve the issue please do the following (please don't change the order of the actions, perform the steps as it is described):

1) Run regedit (Start -> Run -> regedit);

- Delete snapman380 string (only snapman380 string, do not touch other items) from:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} -> UpperFilters (the values are VolSnap tdrpman174 snapman380)

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} -> UpperFilters (the values are VolSnap tdrpman174 snapman380 timounter)

In both cases you should make right-click on UpperFilters string (at the right side of the window and select modify option, delete snapman380 -> OK.

2) Reboot the computer.

3) Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and find snapapi.dll file and rename it to, for example, snapapi1.dll

4) Run regedit (Start -> Run -> regedit)

Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Delete the entire snapman and snapman380 keys (make right-click on them and select Delete).

5) Download the Windows CleanUp utility from here, install and run it, select the Acronis True Image and hit Remove;

6) Reboot the computer.

7) Install the program again.

The issue should be solved.

Thank you.

I installed TI2010 and was having issues with backups locking the machine. Then I installed the snapapi update. Then I uninstalled it, followed the removal directions, reinstalled.

Through the process the following is not right for me...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} -> UpperFilters (the values are VolSnap tdrpman174 snapman380 timounter)

I ONLY have timounter there.

And in LowerFilters there WAS a snapman. While snapman is in lowerfilters it crashes every time. Without snapman in lower filters I get the "unable to open computer" message.

I'd originally installed Maxblast, and upgraded to TI2010. I'm at a loss as to why the upgrade program doesn't have the latest snapapi and do all of this for me.

Hello Brent!

Thank you for finding time to report about the issue and provide us with its detailed description.

Since there is no snapman in the Upper filters in the registry it means that the SnapApi wasn't properly installed. Also please note that you shouldn't remove snapman from the LowerFilters.

Let's try to reinstall in the following way:

  1. Download the Windows CleanUp utility from here, install and run it, select the Acronis True Image and hit Remove.
  2. Reboot the machine
  3. Install the product anew
  4. Check whether everything is working fine and should the issue persist - please contact me via PM, I will provide you with the link to the latest SnapApi for your version of the product.

I would appreciate if you could kindly keep us updated regarding the case. Should you have any further questions or something seem confusing - just simply post a comment here, we will definitely help you.

Thank you!

I have this problem too. Yesterday I downloaded the current build for my Acronis TI Home 2011. I run XP Pro with Sp3 and ALL Microsoft updates.
When I attempt to recover a file from a backup, it gives me anunable to open ( initialize) computer error and recovery of the file fails. I do not have snapman380 at those registry keys.
What should I do?

Hello Mitchell,

Thank you for your message. I will definitely help you with this problem.

Such errors usually indicate a malfunction of the SnapApi driver which is responsible for disk operations.

Please check this article and download the SnapApi update from this link. Install it and reboot your machine. Please note to keep the option - disable logging, disabled.

If this solution does not help, I would appreciate if you can get back to me with this report.

Just in case you need immediate support, you can always contact our Support team with the same report.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Dennis, welcome to these user forums.

I would recommend that you raise this issue in the Acronis Disk Director Forum where you should find other users with experience with that product rather than here in the Acronis True Image (obsolete versions) forum.
