Universal Restore Option Does Not Appear

Thread needs solution

Firstly, I do have a ticket opened with support on this issue, but haven't heard back for a couple of days. So, thought I'd throw it out here to see if anyone has some insight.

I'm attempting to transfer my OS from my old PC to a new one. My old PC is dual-boot, with Win7-64 and WinXP. Here's the process I followed:

1. Partition backup on old system of Win7 and WinXP partitions into a single .tib backup file. (Note: am NOT using the non-stop backup process here, am using a standard backup)
2. Moved this .tib file to a USB attached drive enclosure.
3. Installed Plus Pack.
4. Followed AIK and WinPE image creation process, including adding plugin using the WinPE ISO updater.
5. Burned the resulting .iso image to disk.
6. Attached the USB drive enclosure with the .tib backup to the PC.
7. Booted new computer using that disk into Acronis. I can see the Windows drivers from the WinPE image load properly.
8. Attempted to run Recovery of the .tib backup.
9. PROBLEM: The "Use Acronis Universal Recovery" option does not appear in the "Recovery Method" step of the Recovery process.

Any ideas?

Just re-reading my post, is a bit confusing in some of the later steps, so to clarify steps 6,7, and 8:

6. Attached the USB drive enclosure with the .tib backup to the new PC.
7. Booted new computer using the WinPE CD disk with the Acronis plug-in into Acronis start page. As the system boots, I can see the Windows drivers and files from the WinPE image load properly.
8. Attempted to run Recovery of the .tib backup from the USB attatched drive enclosure.

Hello sydor01,

Thank you for posting. I will do my best to assist you.

I will follow-up with the support representative working on your case to speed things up, in the meantime, could you try using the regular ATIH2011 + AUR bootable media and check if AUR is prompted or not.

You can also check this KB article that has some suggestions for fixing this issue.

If you have additional questions or any concerns about your open case please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Anton, thanks for following up.

I have tried the bootable media specific for my build of 6696, no luck. I also ran through the KB article you linked to, don't believe my issue falls into any of the solutions lists.

The one thing I just noticed I did not mention in my original post (although I did relay this to the engineer) is that when I do the restore, on the target disk I am allocating two partitions, and then pointing each of the OS's (Win7-64 and WinXP) to their own partition on the new disk.

I am getting desperate to move forward on this, as I've had the new PC sitting unused for two weeks now trying to get this to work. If I can't get a resolution on this soon, I'll have to investigate another product and return this one for refund, something I'd rather not have to go through. Anything you can do to help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Sydor01,

Thank you very much for the follow-up.

While we investigate this issue I would recommend the following workaround. It may take additional time and I apologize for any inconvenience.

Please create a separate backup for each of your OSes and then restore them separately as well. I am sure that you will then be prompted for Acronis Universal. After the restore if one of them fails to boot with references to master boot record, you can use this solution.

Let me know if you need additional assistance please.

Thank you.

I was considering doing a separate backup of each partition, but wasn't sure if it would work i.e. the restore would need both partitions available based on the MBR. I'm assuming that the Win7-64 partition should be the first to restore, but can you confirm, or does it matter? And should I do a back to back restore of each partition and then attempt to boot?

I have to be out of town for the next two days, but will try it out this Monday when I'm back. Thanks very much Anton, I'll post here with the results.

Hello sydor01,

Thank you very much for replying.

I would recommend to restore Windows XP first and then recover Windows 7.

If you run into any difficulties please get back to us.

Thank you.
