Universal Restore question
Is it possible to use TI 2014 Universal Restore to move an image created with TI 2013 to a machine with new hardware - or does the requisite Universal Restore image have to be created with TI 2014.

Thanks Pat, that's useful to know. How tried & tested is the UR, and how well does it work in practice. It sounds quite an achievement to separate off the HAL in the backup.

When you restore using UR, the software is asking you for the right low level drivers (typically chipset and disk controller if separate/redundant). They have to be in the right uncompressed format inf and sys (which is not always readily available).
The software slipstreams the drivers during restore and edits the registry, so things can go wrong. The only time I tried it myself, I couldn't get it to work, but plenty of users report success. Since my system is set up so that the system and apps are separate from the content, I find it a good opportunity to reinstall Windows when I need it (I notice I end up reinstalling Windows at least twice a year for various reasons anyway :-).
But UR is worth trying and is the best thing to try short of a fresh reinstall in many cases.

Thanks Pat - I know what you mean - nothing quite beats a 'conventional' install of windows, so that everything gets 'bedded down' properly. UR sounds like it could be useful in terms of getting an install (with all required programs setup) over to a new machine - if needs to happen urgently. Windows by itself is quick to install - rather it's all the 3rd party programs that can take a while to get sorted.
btw, how come you don't just restore a fresh/clean snapshot of system + applications - and instead rebuild he system from the ground up )if I'm understanding you correctly).
I know what you mean about keeping data and system/aps separate -- believe it or not - I've only just cottoned on to that benefit. I think it's because the desktop is so alluring... One thing I've tried to achieve in this regard, but not managed to so - is to add in a short-cut/mount point to the folder hierarchy - so that a location can be added in above the desktop (you know - when you dropdown folder locations and desktop is at the top). That would be so convenient - but I've never been able to find any instructions on if/how it can be managed.
