Universal restore results in broken installation with no display adapter

Thread needs solution

When attempting to migrate a WindowsXP operating system from a Dell laptop to a Dell desktop using Universal Restore, the result is a system where the correct video drivers cannot be loaded since no Display Adapter appears in the Device Manager.

There is an exclamation point on the following device in the Device Manager that may be related:

PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
PCI bus 0, device 2, function 0
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code 12)

No Display Adapter appears or can be added, and when attempting to install the Nvidia display adapter drivers, the installer reports that there is no compatible hardware found in the system.

Attempts to restore without Universal Restore option result in a BSOD on boot. Attempts to specify Universal Restore custom driver locations from the desktop system installation where the correct drivers should be located also results in a BSOD on boot. The PCI driver seems to be the correct version, but somehow gets installed incorrectly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Universal restore does not cover the display adapter. Its is intended to make sure that the chipset drivers for the HD controller are there to avoid the BSOD. See http://kb.acronis.com/content/13671. All drivers other than the chipset need to be manually installed after the restore. I suggest you go to the Dell website and find the correct drivers for the Desktop machine based on its serial number.
