Upgrade laptop HDD and OS

Thread needs solution

Hello all,
I'm looking for what would be the most appropriate way and product to do following
a) upgrade the laptop hdd from 100 to 320. But the laptop hdd has a EISA partition which I would like to be migrated too to the 320Go target HDD
b) upgrade from Vista U 32 to Win7 U 64.

Can ATI 2010 be reliably used for step a ?

Can the migration assitant be used for step b ?

Best regards

Hello Calabrache,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to give you a clear explanation.

Using Acronis True Image Home 2010 you can clone an existing system to a larger hard drive, it will transfer all partitions including EISA. I suppose you are not going to use the transferred system in another laptop so there is no need in Plus Pack add-on, which allows you to restore the image of the system to dissimilar hardware.

Check the following KB article for step-by-step description of “Cloning Laptop Hard Disk

I may also recommend you to check the following KB article before cloning just to be notified about possible issues and how to solve them “HPA Makes the Cloned Drive Display Wrong Capacity

Concerning your second question you see “Clone Disk” feature of Acronis True Image Home 2010 will transfer the system as is, so the operating system will remain intact. So if you want to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7 Acronis True Image Home 2010 will be of little help, eg. you can’t install Windows 7 and then just restore separate applications from Windows Vista using our program.

I may recommend you to download free trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 and test it first.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you

There's an upgrade version of W7 that can be used on Vista although you might have probs with some progs. With an OS, it's best to start with an empty disk, install the OS then install your progs. Ime, it's actually faster to do things from scratch (which also means starting with brand new Registry) than to deal with all the upgrade issues.

ATI can be used to restore your data (as opposed to program or system files) documents, pics, mp3s, etc. once you have your new disk set up with W7 and the programs. For this you would select specific directories/files to be restored.

Hello all,

Yes, the way suggested by Scott is correct too.

Sometimes it's better to install the OS from scratch just to make your registry clear from third part products, it will increase system performance. Also, right after the installation I would recommend you to create the complete system image using our product, so you will be able to recover this clear system anytime when necessary.

Anyway, please feel free to ask me or any moderator for assistance, we would be glad to help you.

Best regards,
