USB flash drive with backup as bootable media

Thread needs solution

I'm writing to clarify this particular subject. I understand there is an ISO file one can use to create a USB stick or CD/DVD which enables one to boot into the Acronis Recovery Environment. My question is *NOT* regarding this.

I am trying to understand the following: when one creates a backup, part of this process includes specifying the destination for the backup files. Next to the box where this is done, there is an additional box which can be ticked; the box says "make this media bootable". Let's say I tick this box and the destination is a FAT-32 formatted USB flash drive (not hard drive) which has sufficient capacity for a full backup, my understanding is that I should subsequently be able to boot directly from this USB flash drive which I have backed up to.

I have tried to do this under two scenarios:
(i) UEFI, secure boot *disabled* - I received a message saying operating system not found
(ii) Legacy BIOS, secure boot *disabled* - I received a messaged saying MBR error, please boot from floppy.

Please could someone explain whether or not my understanding of what the "make this media bootable" tick box does is correct. If it is correct, what may be preventing me from being able to boot from the flash drive?

Thanks in advance and apologies if I've missed a previous post which directly addresses this issue. The product help files were not very illuminating and I can't say I have had much luck with Chat Support. They are telling me that I can do what I want to do with a DVD but not with a USB flash drive. This seems to run counter to what the help files say - http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ATIH2014/index.html#21731…

I have never used that function with a USB flash drive, though I have routinely created bootable USB flash drives as you described in your first paragraph.

Are you able to boot from other bootable USB flash drives, not created via that backup checkbox?

Yes I am. For example if I use the Acronis recoverable media ISO to create a bootable USB flash drive I can boot from that fine. In that scenario I will be in UEFI mode with secure boot disable. I have also used other recovery programs with a bootable USB flash drive such as PartedMagic. In that case I needed to enable legacy BIOS.

If using a flash drive, I would avoid using the SANDISK brand due to its partitioning.

Thanks GroverH. I actually followed both of those pages for disk preparation and setup before I wrote my original post (I should have mentioned this).

I'm wondering, has anyone actually done this successfully?
