USB media wont boot on newer computer

Thread needs solution

Hi

I love my old TI 11. It's been a wonderful tool that's got me out of many holes.

Just had an issue migrating to a new(er) laptop. It's a Dell latitude E6430s. The bios setting for disk is Raid (but it only has one disk). To boot the USB media I have to change it to AHCI mode. I can then do my backup "successful". But to boot the pc I have to change the controller back to raid.

Does this mean the backup just taken is useless?

Is there a way of upgrading my USB media to a more modern kernel?

Thanks

Dave, as far as I am aware there is no RAID support in any of the Linux Rescue Media versions and this cannot be added unless you are using the Windows PE version of Rescue Media.

Thanks Steve.

Does that mean that the backup i took is not worth keeping?

And also that even TI 2018 would not have suitable rescue media?

Thanks

Dave

Dave, the backup you created should be fine provided you take the same approach of changing from RAID to AHCI and back again inbetween any backup & recovery actions.

ATI 2018 no longer defaults to creating the Linux version of the Rescue media, this is now based on the Windows Recovery Environment (Win PE) files, so will include support for RAID and other devices known to that environment.

With ATI 2018 you can also add in additional device drivers to the WinPE Rescue Media using the normal Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool, or by using the MVP Custom ATIPE Builder script which can be found via the MVP User Tools and Tutorials link in the forum pages.

Sorry Steve,

Just done some research and I think I have a better idea of what's what.

OK, correct me if I'm wrong here. There is an alternative rescue media boot system based on windows (winPE) and there is a dedicated Acronis version that runs on it. I guess it has the same feel as the linux based system.

I once used my rescue media to backup a red-hat linux box. does the winPE environment do linux too? I imagine it does because it it only dragging sectors off a disk and later restoring them.

I have always used rescue media when taking system backups to simplify the BU of system data. It looks like it just got complicated on me.

Thanks for your thoughts

Dave

Dave, if your computer can boot from a Windows Install CD, DVD or USB stick, then it can boot from any WinPE media too.  I have used my WinPE Acronis rescue media to backup my Ubuntu systems with no problem.  The only real difference is that ATI will force sector-by-sector mode when it encounters a non-native filesystem, i.e. EXT2/3, so the backup image tends to be much larger than if backing up a NTFS drive where it can better identified used sectors.

Once you are booted into the WinPE environment then the ATI application will look & feel exactly the same as when booted from the Linux media.  The boot OS is simply a launchpad for ATI.

Screen shot of ATI 2018 as shown in WinPE using the rescue media:

Thanks Steve, Sounds perfect.

Also found on the MS knowledge base some info about why. It appears it's only driver level and that is controlled by a couple of registry entries. I have changed the windows system and laptop to AHCI mode and it works even better. It makes sense when you dont have a raid to not try to talk to disks like they are a raid.

Looking forward to playing with new ATI.

Thanks for all they help
