Useability of ATI 2010 with external USB "backup" drives

Thread needs solution

I've used ATI since Day One and have generally had good luck with it, until I tried to make images to my Seagate USB-based external drives, starting with versions post-ATI7. Then I started having "corrupt images" and verify problems. As a result I've since been imaging to Internal (IDE-based) drives i.e. opening the case & installing/pulling backup/internal hdds.

Anyway I have a friend who needs to make backups of his PCs and is looking at a Seagate USB-based external hard drive. Can I recommend to him to use ATI2010? I'd never want him to use my method (internal only) as he's not that "techie" and he'd not want to struggle with that in any event.

I've done some looking around and notice a tip here about making sure to use the PC's motherboard USB connection. And of course I know to use a quality USB cable. Are there any other tips for assuring that a USB external drive will work reliably w/ATI2010???

Love to hear if others are using external USB hard drives successfully, and how.

I had problems in v11 if I used a usb cable 5ft or longer OR plugged into a USB hub or ANY usb port other than the one on the CPU box. Ex some monitors have a usb port on them, this caused me issues.

That was several years ago. Since that time I have always have used a usb cable about 3-4 ft long and plugged directly into the cpu box instead of one presented in some other hardware device. By doing this I have enjoyed 100% success with all backups to usb drives and never have needed to use an "internal only" procedure. I have done this with v11 and am doing it v2010 ( never did get v2009). I have tested several of my v2010 .tib backups to usb drives and all of them were perfect.

My internal disks are faster than the usb interface so the same backup to internal disks finish faster.
But other than the time required to make the backup,
I have no concerns at about a backup being directed to a USB device.

I multiplex backups which are mission critical/very very important to me.
Multiplex isn't quite the right word as I do not fork the same write to two locations at the same time.
Intead what I do is schedule two backups one immediatly after the other (such as one at 2:01am and another at 2:02am) The 2:02 will "wait" until the 1st finishes and then immediatly begin. One of these backups will be to an internal device on the network the other will be to a usb device. By doing this I have two independant backups located in seperate devices/locations. Both would need to fail at the same time before I was totally un-protected.

I think you'll find that the majority of forum members use a usb drive to hold Backups. What build of 2010 do you have? Build 5055 seems to be less problematic that the two later builds, 6029 and 6035.

Thanks guys for your feedback, I appreciate it!

I just bought the 2010 upgrade yesterday and haven't even downloaded it yet, so I suppose when I do it will be the latest build. Not sure if an older build is retrievable anywhere?

I'm gonna sort thru my many USB cables and see which one(s) appear the shortest-and-stoutest to use exclusively with my PCs' mobo USB connections-direct.

Thanks again.

My ATI2010 worked right off (build 6053) with my Seagate FreeAgent drive. I found a very nice, short, heavy-duty cable w/Mini-B connector at newegg.com that I can highly recommend:

When I look at some of the cables that are packaged with cameras, and then think about using the front USB connections on my PC case (and the skinny wires from the mobo) I can see where problems might arise...
