Validation Errors Out with "Insufficient system resources"

Thread needs solution

I know of and have read the KB article on this at . But I am still having troubles. I am running ATI Home 10 (build 4942) on an HP Laptop running XP Pro SP-3. The system has 2G of RAM and plenty of free hard disk space. I get the following emailed to me - not every time my backup/verify job runs on the scheduler - but almost every time (I cannot ascertain any pattern to the success/failure):

27 Error 11/4/2009 2:57:07 PM Operation with partition "0-0" was terminated.
Details:
Read error (0x70003)
Tag = 0x82DB9339B70C3AF9
Error reading the file. (0x40001)
function = "ReadFile"
Tag = 0x7CEB2CDC9FB12014
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (0xFFF0)
code = 800705AA
Tag = 0xBD28FDBD64EDB8A6
28 Error 11/4/2009 2:57:07 PM Operation has completed with errors.

So:

(a) The KB article does not include my version of ATI in its "applies to" list. So what about that?

(b) In the article, I find references to increasing memory pool size. But after googling around, I cannot find anything describing this for XP. Other versions of Windows (typically Server), yes - but XP no. What's up with that?

(c) The article suggests eliminating memory-hungry processes before running the ATI job. I have the job scheduled to run middle of the night. I reboot the system at the close of business (6pm). So there is really nothing running from that time until when the ATI job starts. Still I get this failure.

(d) The article suggests that somehow I should schedule backup and validation in separate tasks. But I only seem to be able to create tasks that do backups. I see no way to create tasks that perform verify. Anyhow, I create my backups in a backup location. So I don't really know the name of the file(s) created. So how could I create a verify task anyhow when I don't know how to specify what the file name is to verify? The only way to do it seems to be as part of the backup (which then fails) or manually (which is unacceptable).

I had the same version of ATI Home on a different HP laptop that, unfortunately, died prematurely. My ATI Home jobs ran without troubles on the last system. I got this one as a replacement and it is very similar including disk and RAM. So why is this a problem now when it did not use to be?

Please help me!

Just a follow-up... I have added a scheduled task to restart the computer about an hour before the backup/validate job is supposed to start. Since doing this three days ago, I have found that the backup/validate is actually running to completion. I sure hope this keeps up.

I encounter the same problem from time to time. I have 3GB, and if I shutdown a bunch of apps (including Firefox, that still leaks memory like mad) the validation process completes. Thus a reboot may not be necessary.

To Acronis: Clear error messages! Making customers hunt down stuff is bad business (I know I am no longer recommending Acronis to anyone).

Hello all!

Thank you for reporting about the issue and especially for specifying the log file - it clarified the situation.

You are right - the error

Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (0xFFF0)

indicates that there is not enough RAM for completing the operation - actually this error refers more to Windows than to Acronis software. Validation is a resource-intensive process: during the backup process we count hash values for the sectors, and during validation verify whether it properly compares to the information on the drive. So in case the RAM is busy with another processes or broken you can encounter this issue.

In this case all we can do to improve the situation is increasing the RAM. Microsoft has a nice article concerning increasing the random access memory, also you can find the user-friendly instructions here and here.

I would appreciate if you could let me know whether this helped resolving the issue, and if you could share your concerns with me - I will be glad to answer all the questions.

Thank you!

1) The Microsoft KB reference was for Win98 ... kinda out of date, eh? Need XP support as most of the suggestions therein were not applicable.

2) How much memory does Acronis need for validation? I'm using 3GB of RAM and 6GB of swap, so I'm seriously dismayed at the possibility that Acronis might have used 9GB during a nominal operation.

3) Some experimenting leads me to believe that Acronis is only using RAM (which for performance reasons I can understand). Please verify. Since 32-bit XP is limited to 3GB, there is no option for increasing RAM.

Hello Guy,

1. This article just describes the general procedure on how to increase RAM on your PC, so the general suggestion was to increase total amount of RAM. But since you already have 3 GB of RAM, it's not necessary to increase it.

2. It depends on image size you're trying to validate. It can require for more than 3 GB's of RAM.

3. Yes, you're right here. RAM is the only resource which is used to process the data during validation. As usual process it surely requires CPU load too.

In your case, I would recommend to divide your tasks in the following way:

Exclude validation from usual task, just perform the backups themselves.

Set the validation task separately, you will be able to do so in the task creation menu. So your system will perform the validation when memory is free from backup procedure.

I'd like to make sure all your queries regarding Acronis products are resolved.
Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Regards,

Given that a 1GB incremental takes anywhere from an hour to 12+ hours (this has been documented in support calls), dividing the nightly backups into two functions is a scheduling impossibility.

I apologize for the duplicate post. Please remove the first post.

I am experiencing the same problem with validation failing due to insufficient resources. However, unlike the previous comments, our server is so over-powered, I am very dismayed.

I am using a Dell PowerEdge Server running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise with two Quad Core 3.5Ghz processors, 12 Gb of DDR Ram, with the PAE switch set in boot.ini so the machine has all RAM available. Note that the Enterprise version of Server 2003 can recognize and use up to 12 Gb of RAM with the PAE switch set. In addition to the RAM, I have the paging (swap) file set to 24 GB, twice the amount of RAM.

I am running Acronis 10 Server, latest version of 11639. Backup is about 300Gb.

Regardless of whether I run validation separate from the backup or not, even manually, or whether I validate the latest backup or entire archive, the validation fails with the insuffient resources error. I have tried restarting with the same result.

How is this possible?

I have a growing suspicion, but need to encounter the problem again before I take action.

The same system from where I originally reported the problem also has occasional Windows handle outages. Some apps leak handle objects, mainly GDIs. The URLs below detail tactics for adjusting these.

I do not know that this is the source of the problem, but it is one I'll chase down the next time Acronis fails.

Thank you!

I have not tried the memory pool fix. I'll wait until the error occurs again before making that tweak.

I have tried the MaxMemoryUsage registry setting and will run validation after our backup tonight as a seperate task. If needed, I'll increase the memory pool, but please note that Microsoft states this can result in problems with other programs and we run some intensive datbase work during the day.

I'll report after I run the backup a couple of times.

Now here's a real puzzler and a possible clue for Acronis developers.

I am getting the same insufficient resources error with Acronis Workstation 2010 which we're trying for evaluation on an XP (SP3) machine with 4Gb Ram and a 3.2Ghz dual core processor. I'll try again after a registry fix.

HOWEVER, just for kicks and grins, after uninstalling the Workstation version, I loaded True Image HOME 2010 trial on the same machine. It not only perfomed the backup flawlessly, it validated as part of the backup with zero errors!!!!! Then I uninstalled the Home version and reinstalled the Workstation version and ran the same task again. Again, validation faled.

So perhaps the architecture of the two versions of TI needs to be examined, and whatever you're doing right in the Home version, you should do in the Workstation version.

By the way, since no one else has asked this question, I will: Why doesn't TI run validation after the backup instead of during the backup file by file?

If the program is that big of a memory hog, shouldn't it first run the back up, then validate afterwards, then process any files which didn't validate? Seems as if that would take the same amount of time but would split up the tasks. Just a thought.
