WD internal hard drive with bad sectors, cloning with True Image

Thread needs solution

Hi, all
on my dell laptop, the WD scorpion blue WD800BEVS has 4 KB bad sectors(chkdsk report shows ),now I want to use True Image WD version to clone this 80G hard drive to a new WD 160G hard drive, how can I avoid copying the "bad" 4KB sector to the new hard drive? because it seems the clone will copy the file/partition list of the original disk to the new one, makes the new hard drive showing it has some "bad" sector, which only exists in the list.
I am running windows XP sp3.

regards,
t

Did you run chkdsk C: /f? Tyr that so it repairs the bad sectors.

actually I run chkdsk/r. and the 4kB bad sector is what I have in the report.

I read from internet, the true image will copy the " bad" sector to the new hard drive, but in Vista or window 98, you have the option chkdsk/b which will reset the sector list. then you run a chekdisk, it will give you the real results. but this option is not in XP. it sucks.

It has been said that resizing the partition (even a very small change) when you do the restore will remove the bad sector table.

hi, seek,
can this resize done with True Image? or I have to use partition magic? magic seems not a free one, or the free trial version does nothing.

TI, at least the regular one, has the facility in a screen in the image restore wizard.
Doing a disk clone also will do resizing but I never do clones so that's about all I can say about it.

Hello all,

thomasjk and Seekforever, thanks for your help.

Ted, let me shed some more light on your concern.

As previous posters mentioned, if your hard drive has several bad sectors, you can back it up and restore it with resizing partitions, and this will eliminate bad sectors that have been backed up. Even you won't be able to create a general backup archive (since Acronis True Image is not intended to work with corrupted drives), you can create a sector-by-sector backup.

I may recommend you to download and install the trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 in order to check how it works on you computer. The functional limitation of Acronis True Image trial version is that you can only restore and validate an image when you run the program from the bootable media. Windows version is functional for 15 days only and it does not have any more limitations.

You can find the information on how to back up your drive with sector-by-sector approach at the Chapter 6 of the User's Guide. And the guide on how to restore the disk with resizing is available in the Chapter 10 or at this KB article.

Please reply to this thread if you need any further assistance.

Thank you.
