Western Digital restore problem

Thread needs solution

Sorry if this is the wrong forum

I've been using ATI that came with my WD disk and in the past have successfully restored.
Yesterday after a bad WIN 8.1 upgrade I attempted to restore the backup but it failed. In the last couple of months I have added a SSD(Samsung) and copied the OS from the WD drive which is now used for data. ATI happily runs as my system still has a WD drive present, but I'm wondering if the restore will only restore onto a WD drive?

I downloaded the trail of the full ATI and it worked

The WD Edition is based on an Acronis True Image release from a few years ago, so likely is not compatible with Win8.1. Also, I believed it's modified to work only with WD drives.

Well after several hours on support with MS I still haven't got a licensed system. The state of play ATM is quite strange. The MS support guy(level 3) told me as an aside that MS no longer recommends imaging software. I can only assume that MS does something very funcky with the MBR or track 0. He also said restoring to SSD was "problematic". I don't know how much to believe him because when I suggested rolling back to a restore point he asserted that only programs and drivers were backuped and the registry wasn't! It does look like like I've lost my HKLM/Software/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion which the MS guy thinks is ATI fault but I find the neat removal of a registry key by ATI to be unbelievable. I personally thinks it software
