What happened to backup locations in TI Home 2009?

Thread needs solution

I'm used to using Acronis TI Home version 11.0 but just installed TI Home 2009 on another person's computer.

What happened to "backup locations" that I love in version 11? They appear to be missing. We do only full backups and want to control the number of versions we can create. This is easy in version 11 but I can't figure out how to do this in the 2009 version.

IOW, we don't want to use the same tib file name each time I do a backup because we don't want to overwrite the last file we created. We want to create multiple "generations" of tib files, the number to be determined by the user (us).

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

The Backup Locations feature was removed in TI 2009.

You should be able to make multiple Full backup images using the following method:

  • Setup the task for Incremental backups.
  • Check the Create new full backup after option and set the number to 0 (zero).
  • In the Automatic Consolidation section, check the Number of backups exceeds option and set the number to how many you want. When the number goes over the number you select, the oldest Full is deleted.

Test this method and see if you get the results you want.

Hello Assistance League,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

I may also recommend you to use the following KB article to set up a pre-backup command that will automatically manage backup files saved to a local disk. Using batch file from this article you will be able to create a set of Full backups only or certain number of set of Full + Incremental/Differential backups.

This is a godawful step backwards from prior versions of ATI.

We'll soon see if Acronis has learned the error of it's ways with the new version coming out soon. Hopefully, it won't need to encourage folks to use batch files to automate backup file management, since whatever can be done in a batch file, Acronis could have built into the program in the first place.

Reporting back in on Mudcrab's suggestion. It's mostly good news and a little bit of confusion.

I did four backups this morning, at 8 AM, 9 AM, 10 AM and 10:30 AM. A full backup was created each time. See attached screenshot of backup folder in Windows Explorer.

A weird thing did happen. When I took the screenshot at 10:48 AM, there were four OSBx.tib files in the folder. I just looked again and now there are only three (I did set it up for three files to be retained). It seems as if it took a while for the oldest to roll off. Maybe I took the screenshot while the validate was still going on and the process wasn't fully completed. I can't say for  sure.

The file naming convention is a bit strange (OSB.tib for the first, OSB2.tib for the second and OSB2(x).tib for the rest) but I guess I'm used to the date/time convention used in version 11's (wonderful) backup locations feature. LOL!

The normal file naming uses the (#).

When testing this method, it worked correctly. However, I would recommend that you create a separate folder for the task (just those backups -- no other images or files) and that you start the task new for that folder (let it create the first Incremental/Full image on the first task run).

It's possible part of the filename problem is because of existing images.

I'm confused with the file naming conventions in the 2009 version of True Image. I ran a full backup and the program named it Backup(1) with parentheses. It then ran a scheduled backup and named it My Backup 2, with no parentheses. By its size, it looks like an incremental backup. An earlier full backup was named by the program as My Backup, no numbers, no parentheses, but it added the "My". What's going on? Is a system volume backup (as referred to in the "Protection State" screen, a disc image? If so, what naming convention is used for its incremental backups? I would think there would be a reference back to its "parent" to avoid confusion.

Steven, you got the My Backup.tib as either you didn't change the default  name, clicked on 'generate name' or TI spat the dummy - the last happens if you try to edit or 'tamper' with a schedule and the backup place is not available i.e. the external drive wasn't attached or switched on.

File naming is a little clearer if you give the image a distinct name, however it is true it sometimes seems to make it up as it goes along.

I think the reason it alternates between parentheses is you to differentiate the cycles.

I've just run a protection image and mine is in the folder My Backups and named MyBackup1.tib as these are full backups incrementals and differentials are not possible, then I would expect your next file to be MyBackup2.tib and so on.

My reply is confusing, so I'll start again.

If you create a task then the default name is MyBackup.tib, however this is the only name available for a OneClick backup. If they are going to the same place then you will see the bracket differentiation between the two types.

OK, appreciate your comments. I did delete an older backup so maybe this messed up the naming sequence. Thanks.

Did  okay in 10, but the deaded version 11 was problematic, iirc. The alternative ATI has chosen has even more probs if you follow the forums.
