What privileges are required for a backup-only userid?

Thread needs solution

TI Home 2009, build 9809
Windows XP Pro SP3

My scheduled nightly backup still fails to run occasionally ("Logon failure: user account restriction ..."), so I thought I'd create a new user strictly for doing backups, just to see what happens.

Is membership in the "Backup Operators" group sufficient, or does the user require additional privileges?

Hello Bert,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to give you a clear explanation.

It is sufficient for user account to be a member just of “Backup Operators” group in order to perform the schedule tasks. If you want to run the scheduled task under a user account with no administrator rights, you should make the account a member of the Backup Operators group in the following way:

  • Log in under an account with administrator rights;
  • Click Start -> Run and type lusrmgr.msc;
  • On the Local Users and Groups window click Users;
  • Right-click the user you want to add to Backup Operators and choose Properties;
  • On the User Properties window click Add;
  • On the Select Groups window type in Backup Operators and click OK.

This will make the user account a member of Backup Operators and will allow you to do scheduled tasks under it.

Regarding the actual issue the possible reason can be incorrectly provided password within the program or the user account, under which the task was scheduled to run, was modified or deleted.

To solve the issue please reschedule or edit the task with correct credentials.

If the issue persists please provide full error message to your next reply. Also please attach log file with the error message (Tasks and Logs -> Logs -> Right-click the last log file -> Save).

Let me know if the issue persists or you need further assistance.

Thank you.
