Why can I not do a successful backup to DVD?

Thread needs solution

Setup: Acronis TIH 2011 running on Windows 7 64 bit.

I've been working at backup of a collection of pictures and some video. I tried the `Files' method but the software never seemed to notice I was backing up more data than will fit on a single DVD. No prompt for another disk or the like.

Just a message after a very long wait saying `The last backup has been cancelled by user'

After ruining 5-6 discs with these attempts...
And trying `automatic' and manual setting of "File Backup Options / Backup Splitting, I decided to scrap the `files' method and backup the whole partition. Finally I started getting prompts indicating the software realized it was dealing with a multiple DVD situation.

Filled 2 disks, then crapped out with that same useless and untrue message.
`The last backup was cancelled by user'

There is something like 45 GB of data on that partition, so I know it wasn't all backed up on 2 DVDS.

I'm not sure what else to do in order to get a successful backup onto a set of DVDs. I hope someone here can coach me.

There is no advantage to backing up highly compressed video and photo files with Acronis True Image. The size of the backup will not be much smaller, if at all, than the source material so you won't save any storage space. Additionally, with DVDs being somewhat unreliable, a single bit error in the written DVD can render the entire TI backup archive corrupt.

Instead, why don't you just copy your photos and videos to DVD using Windows or your favorite DVD burning software? If there is any deterioration over time on the DVD copies then it may only affect one photo or one video instead of the entire lot.

If your files are irreplaceable then don't rely on DVDs as a storage medium. You will be better off using an external USB hard disk instead.
