Why To Restore MBR On Second Pass And Not Right Away?

Thread needs solution

I read this here. It says to restore MBR on second pass if i decide to do resizing of partition. Why not on first pass?

When resizing partition i have to choose Active, Primary or Logical. And when not resizing i do not have to choose anything. Why is that?

What if i decide to backup to external hard drive, but put bootable Acronis to flash drive? Will it work with my external hard drive with USB interface? If not, what are options?

That guide is quite old now and was written for TI 10 and versions around that time (9, 10, 11). The reason that you can't restore the partition and the MBR in one step is because those versions of TI only let you select one item at a time. When you got to the end of the wizard it would ask if you wanted to restore something else and you would select Yes. Both the partition and MBR are restored in the same restore process.

Different options are available depending on how you did the restore. You can't select the partition type, etc. when restoring the Disk image because those can't be changed in that mode. When restoring just the partition those settings need to be selected to ensure it is restored correctly.

I would assume you are using a more current version of TI (possibly TI 2011?). The newer versions behave differently when creating USB media. I would recommend you try it using the Media Builder program first and see if it works. Additionally, I now recommend using the Grub4DOS method instead of my old guide since it offers much more flexibility. Windows Vista/Win7 DISKPARK can also be used to make the flash drive bootable if Media Builder fails to do so.

There normally isn't a problem with TI finding and using USB drives and there's shouldn't be a problem booting from a flash drive and accessing files on a USB hard drive. You would need to test it on your system to verify for sure, though.

Because in case of archive containing one partition, if you check both partition and MBR at once (i.e. all items in archive) it will automatically check the checkbox near 'disk' and switch you to disk mode that is much less flexible - it will demand to select the whole disk as destination and overwrite any partitions that exist on it.
