Will change of drive letters since last backup?

Thread needs solution

I have True Image home 2009 latest build. I made a complete image of Drive 0 several weeks back that consisted of C:operating system and D: which was the Dell recovery portion. The Image was stored on my second Hard drive 1 which at that time was F:. Since that time Dell has installed a new mother board and a new hard drive which still contains C: but the recovery portion is now I: and my second drive is now the D: drive.

Is there going to be a problem restoring the image of Drive o which contains C: and D: when there is already a D: drive on the computer? The second drive is only used for backups. I know that I can change the letter and paths for either drive in computer management and would rather change the Recovery portion of drive o than change the second from D:. I just don't know what kind of trouble I might be getting into by changing anything.

I hope someone can make sense of the above and can give me some advice. It would be much appreciated.

Hello BobT,

I understand the question and will do my best to give you a clear explanation on how to proceed.

First of all I should tell you that using Acronis True Image Home 2009 you can’t restore images to dissimilar hardware. You have mentioned about changing the motherboard so it would be the case.

There are two ways you can proceed. The simple way is to create a new backup image from the scratch with newly installed motherboard. Alternately you can upgrade Acronis True Image Home 2009 to Acronis True Image Home 2010 using our online store and additional purchase Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack. Using Acronis True Image Home 2010 with Plus pack add-on you will be able to restore the image of the system to dissimilar hardware.

When you store some partition image, it stores with fixed set of letters. But if you already have the same letter in your system - surely the product will restore with another one. So there would not be a conflict and double letters issue. Actually, you will be prompted to select the letter for the restored partition during the process.

Please check Chapter 6.3 of this User's Guide for the detailed information.

Also you have noted correctly that you can always change letter through Disk Management  (Start->Run->diskmgmt.msc) by clicking on the partition -> Change Drive Letters and Paths.

Check the following article for more information about Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank You.
