Win 7 Backup stops windows from shutting down
I am using Acronis True image Home 11 on a Windows 7 Desktop and it has become very unstable.
After I finish a disk backup to a USB attached external disk the system does not seem to shut down. I have turned off windows update but still get a message as follows:
"Operations in progress. please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete."
It sometimes shuts down after a few hours and sometimes even takes 7 or more hours.
That is bad enough but when I boot up again it gets stuck at starting windows with the 4 colored petal permanently stuck for hours. Sometimes i will get a system repair message after it reboots but frequently it will "hang" for 5-7 hours till I run out of patience. If I do use System Repair ( original Win7 disk) it takes an hour and checkdisk reports significant fixes but all things work ultimatly.
Has anyone any idea what is going wrong?
I have attached an old copy of Acronis system report since the syste is currently down and I am using an alternate PC to log this request for help.
Summary of other info. HP Desktop with 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD and 1 Mbps broadband connection. PC Doctor diagnostics reports all Ok and internet connection is as fast as advertised. I have ran Microsoft FIXIT and no errors. I have scanned for malware with Norton using a Boot disk ( bare metal) and no issues. My Acronis back up is from Windows. Using Acronis true Image Home 2011 update 1 build 6696. the Hardisk has a 230 GB windows partition and a 220 GB Data partition.

Arwind,
Download the latest build of ATI 2011, uninstall your current build and install the latest one.

Thanks Pat
Did not realize ATI did not get the latest update. I had it set up for automatic update. Will do so and report. In the meanwhile I did power off and rebooted. I ran Acronis Info report and attach that. I also grabbed two log files and it does seem that a new backup validation task is scheduled and started after the original finishes. See attached.
I received two email from Acronis. I started the backup with validation at 6.50 AM and received this at 6.48 PM ( normally it should come in 6 1/2-7 hours)
HP_Full_Aug5_2011 Task is waiting for user interaction.

Arvind,
Yes, it looks like you have a validation task that is running. Edit your backup settings, go to the advanced tab, check your validation schedule. Is there a monthly task scheduled? ATI schedules such a task by default.
If not, go to C:\programdata\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts and you should see one or 2 files with a key-like name. Right click on each of them and choose edit. One of the them should be your backup task, maybe another one is the validation task, and you might have some other ones.
If you have a script that doesn't correspond to a scheduled tasks that you want, uninstall ATI, reboot and reinstall. If you don't use online backup, do not install it (advanced installation options). Set up fresh new backup tasks. For each schedule (of a taks or of a validation), edit the backup settings, open the scheduler window and uncheck any box under the advanced settings.

Thanks Pat
I uninstalled ATI but it needed a reboot and now the system does not boot back. Trying to recover and twiddling as it takes ages. I am in quiet a pickel here...
Sigh ..this has been such a time soaker...
Is the operations in progress problem definitely resolved. I have lost a fair amount of time with this and was just thinking of waiting for some time and a few releases and updates from others before using Acronis again. in the meanwhile I will just backup the data partition using Windows...

Pat
I suspect the issue may be in Windows 7.

Clearly there is an issue with ATI2011 with this shutdown process. You have taken the right actions to see if you were perhaps in a different situation, but it doesn't look like.

I have succesfully resolved this issue.
The failure to shut down goes away after I upgraded to latest build 6868 and did the following
1) Did not install Online Backup
2) Turned regular validation off in each backup job
I also managed to solve the problem i had in re starting Windows.
It turned out to be a Hardware issue and HP replaced the motherboard at no cost. Seems under some conditions on powerup the system would fail to recognize the Seagate hard disk.
Now it has been working fine for more than a week

So that you know, I did not install Online Backup and I have a regular validation scheduled but, for both the backup task and the validation task schedule, I have unchecked all the check boxes in the advanced schedule settings.
I have never seen the "operations in progress".
