Win 7/Trueimage 2014-Safe Mode when cloning HD to SSD

Thread needs solution

I'm about to clone my Dell hard drive to an SSD, which I will then designate as the primary boot drive. I then plan to use the HD to store photos etc., though it will still be bootable as secondary drive.

I have 2014 TI Premium installed.

Question:- is it OK to start up Windows as normal, then use TI to clone HD to SSD, or would it be better to boot into Safe Mode and then start the clone? Will TI clone in Safe Mode?

The recommended procedure to clone a drive is to use the user created bootable recovery media which can be downloaded from your Acronis account. It is further recommended that you perform a full disk mode backup of your present disk as a precaution against something going wrong during the clone process. The link provided below describes the clone process in detail and is a must read as well.

Thanks for that information.

The reason I asked is that Cloning will run from the installed TI2014 programme (or at least, it will start up and ask for inputs; I haven't got the SSD yet so can't go further anyway). There also doesn't seem to be any firm mention that it should for preference be run from the Acronis boot disk.

It didn't strike me as being an very good idea to attempt a clone from a disk running in full Windows mode, even with as many processes as possible being stopped or killed off.

True, the documentation does not worn against cloning of an OS from the application running inside the OS itself. What occurs during a clone however is that once you have set the clone options and chosen to proceed the machine will request a reboot and then boot into the same Linux environment that is used for the bootable recovery media to perform the clone anyway. In my opinion it is not wise to trust the procedure when run from within Windows. Another point is that you should have a way of running the application from a stand alone media in case your HDD dies completely so you should create one, make sure it boots your machine and run clones from it.
