Win XP does not boot on Cloned Drive

Thread needs solution

I used Acronis True Image 9.0 to clone a single partition 160MB PATA hard drive ( connected via with a SATA coverter) to a new single partition larger 1TB and faster SATA drive. Acronis claims to clone the OS and MBR and to create a perfect replica. The cloning process completed with the message "successful"

I pointed the BIOS to the new cloned disk and disconnected the old disk.
However, the PC fails to boot from the cloned disk
Windows XP starts with displayig its logo and all, but then stops and never identifies user and never starts the "Loading your personal files" phase as the old drive would. There is no Windows error message.

Why wont' it the boot complete? Does a registered version Windows XP only work on the initial drive?

Suspecting a corruption, I redid the cloning of the new drive, but experienced the exact same result.

The copy of XP I use is a registered OEM version, not a PC vendor-specific version.

OEM versions are usually made to work on ony the one machine, so that might be the issue. You could test this by putting a drive in the same location/connection as the original ddrive, restoring to that drive and then seeing if it boots okay.
