Windows 3.1 image?

Thread needs solution

Is it possible to create a Win 3.1 image, possibly with a TI10 or 11 boot disc? The end game is to virtualize an existing installation, complete with applications and data in VMWare. Currently it resides in an old 486SX.

Not sure what you are trying to do do but I don't think the newer versions support it but one of those golden oldies like ati10 might do okay if you you did a full backup, grabbing all the partitions (which will also grab the mbr). Restoring would then give you the same image on the target disk.

I can't see why not, and if I understand your position correctly, you have nothing to loose by trying. I don't know if ATIH "knows" anything about the underlying OS but if it does, you could always back up sector by sector (a 486sx HDD probably isn't very big). I don't recall whether the boot CD supports converting your image to a .vhd file-- you might have to take it to a higher level OS running the full TIH for that. Then you should be able to boot your .vhd.

I don't know anything about the format of bootable .vhd's and whether they actually have an mbr, but it shouldn't care what's on there to get booted.

I think it might work and it's worth experimenting with.
