Windows 7 issue

Thread needs solution

I am running Windoews 7 Home Premium on a laptop and recently uninstalled True Image 2012 but now the back up and restore facility fails to work. I see a number of posts online about this issue but just wonder if anyone has had this issue and has a solution that works?

Richard, from your description, it looks likely that you are writing about the integration of Acronis 2012 with Windows that can be enabled or disabled using the options provided in the product.

See KB 23978: Acronis True Image Home 2012: Windows Integration which describes this feature of the product.

If you have uninstalled ATI 2012 without first disabling the Windows Integration, then I suspect that you will need to reinstall the product again in order to disable this.  If you don't have the ATI 2012 install media / program, then you should be able to download this from your Acronis account.

Steve,

Many thanks for your reply. I have managed to reinstall Acronis TIH 2012 and followed the instructions to disable the windows integration. However each time I untick the box to disable it, it switches itself back on?

Regards

 Richard

Richard, it has been a very long time since I have used ATI 2012 (if I did actually use it) and later versions of ATI skipped providing this type of Windows Integration.

Are you running ATI 2012 as Administrator when you try to disable the integration?

Steve,

Yes I am running as Administrator when I try to disable the integration - could it be at least one of the check boxes has to be ticked?

Richard

Richard, my reading of the KB document suggests that at a minimum you need the top two boxes to be left unticked, but that you should be able to disable all of these integration functions.

The key option for your situation is the top one:

  • Acronis console in Windows Control Panel (Windows 7 only) - Substitutes the default Windows 7 backup and restore option with Acronis True Image Home 2012. Disabling this option will automatically bring back the built-in Windows backups;

Just found another KB on this issue that may help:  KB 26912: Acronis True Image Home 2012: Disabling "Acronis Console in Windows Control Panel" Malfunctions in Windows 7 which provides a download of a fix which you can try.

Solution

Download and unzip the file with the fix. Run the unzipped file and agree to add changes to the registry. This will force the removal of Acronis integration from the system and enable Windows backup.

Another webpage found is: Fix Windows 7 Backup and Restore Not Launching After Uninstalling Acronis True Image which has directions of making Windows Registry changes to fix this issue, if this is still needed.

Steve,

Many thanks - THIS WORKED. Just installed and ran the zipped registry file and it solved the issue. Thank you so much for your advice.

One last question - Is it now safe to uninstall Acronis or is there something else i need to do, firstly to remove it completely from my OS and secondly so it does not leave something lurking in the registry!

Richard

Richard, just do a normal uninstall of ATI 2012 via the Control Panel > Programs & Features, then when done, run the Acronis Cleanup Tool (link in my signature) to ensure all other traces of the product are gone.  Restart the computer and that should be all that is needed.
