Windows 7 upgrade from xp: clone Sata 3 drive to Sata 6 drive Same size HD's, Will not boot

Thread needs solution

Greetings,

I first purchased True Image last year but the drive was trying to clone was failing and the clone process failed due to bad sectors. Did not use until now. Free support is no longer available so I hope someone here has suggestions. I have a WD green 1.5 tb sata 3gbps hdd that I am trying to clone to a WD green 1.5 tb sata 6gbps hdd. The original drive was an XP installation that was upgraded to windows 7 home premium It has 3 drives and one hidden drive/partition. All information, partitions transferred accordingly. I reviewed these drives with options to view hidden files and folders turned on in the system that was used to clone these drives via Thermaltake BlacX external drives, one set to esata and the other via usb 2.0. Virtual drive sizes and file data are the same between the 2 drives.

When the new drive is installed, the Windows boot manager says the system failed to start. May be due to software changes. It indicated using the install disk and running system repair.

I am reluctant to do so since I was under the impression that the clone should have worked seamlessly. All data is going back into the same hardware just on a 6gbps hdd instead of a 3gbps hdd. The drives are even plugged into the same connector on the mb.

What do I have to do to get the system to find the correct files?

Additionally the drives were cloned on a different Windows 7 pc and each of the drives; original and cloned were assigned drive letters. After installing the new drive and having the boot fail, I pulled it, put it back into the other pc and removed all drive lettering for all 4 sectors. I put it back into its original system and again it will not boot with the same reason.

Hopefully someone out there has encountered this and found a solution. There were many Windows 7 upgrade 3packs sold so I cannot be the only one with this issue.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Robert,
There is no upgrade path from XP to Windows 7. Only Vista can be (truly) upgraded to Win7. Based on what I'm reading, I see this is nothing more than incorrect terminology, but I believe we all understand what you are trying to do. You can fill in the empty spaces (please) if I get something wrong.

The most reliable and safest way to migrate to a larger or smaller drive is to create a full Disk Image Back Up that includes all partitions (Including OEM and hidden if applicable).

We typically recommend that you take a screen capture of your Disk Management (layout and structure, as well as giving your partitions unique names) this is very helpful when you are recovering to the new hardware.

Next you'll want to review this Guide written by GroverH - An esteem MVP. http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618

The basic premise is this. You are going to restore each partition one at a time, in the sequence they are in now (old drive) to the new disk. (Example OEM, System Reserved, OS, Data)... The operations are performed one at a time, and you don't have to restart until the end. This ensures proper layout and alignment. There are examples and pictures. You will also have the ability to shrink or enlarge partitions as you wish.

We recommend performing these operations using Acronis Boot Media... which can be downloaded free from your user acct at Acronis.com.

If you don't have the latest build available for the version you own, this is a perfect time to grab and work with the latest build. Lets start with this. Please post back with questions and one or more of us will be happy to assist you further.
