Windows hangs on Welcome Screen

Thread needs solution

I bought a new 120GB HDD.  Used my XP Professional disk to format and install XP using one full sized partition.  It installed OS as Active as Primary was not an option.  I'm using ATI 8

Next I booted from the Acronis recovery disk and restored an image from the previous smaller HDD.  That went OK and then, on reboot, it boots fine to the "Windows is starting up" screen and then goes no further and I can't do anything.  If I boot into safe mode it is just the same.  The mouse curser works but nothing elso goes forward.  A little HDD activity then nothing.

Did the installed XP boot normally before you restored the old image?

I never used TI 8 so I don't know if it has the option to restore just the partition or the entire drive. Have you tried both?

Yes the installed XP was perfect until I then rebooted with the Acronis boot up disk and installed my image.

The whole new drive space was Partition C (Active) and Acronis was set to restore C>C  i.e. the image should have installed over the installed XP.   I am going to try the XP disk again and use the Repair option.  It is obviously some driver or program boot up which is lacking in my image or conflicts with the fresh XP that was installed.  The image had a recent upgrade to SP3 so I wonder if there is something there?   This is the first time I've had a problem with a Restore of an image.  I wonder if I should have used the Disk clone option?

Update.  I formatted and then used Acronis on another machine to write a disk clone on the new drive.

That worked fine, so, problem solved.
