ATI 2016 + Parallels Desktop 11: not creating snapshots
Hi, I'm trying out Acronis True Image 2016 for Mac in hopes of creating stateful image backups of my Windows VM. However, it's not creating snapshots for consistency, which is supposed to be the whole point of using Acronis, a Parallels partner. The ATI backup works, it's just not creating snapshots of active VMs.
Acronis log shows:
sudo -u admin /usr/local/bin/prlctl snapshot {6c521447-25f2-43b4-b53d-b387d78cabe3} -n "Acronis Snapshot" -d "Acronis Snapshot"
2015-12-02T13:37:43.860 | 3 | 0x000 | 0x0000 | The command is available only in Parallels Desktop for Mac Pro or Business Edition.
But you're not supposed to need Pro or Business for Acronis active snapshot support, it's supposed to work with normal Parallels Desktop. Am I doing something wrong? Can you reproduce this problem? I've also opened a ticket with Parallels support.
Thanks, d

Parallels Desktop 11 was released 4 months ago, you have had multiple updates of Acronis TI 2016 since then, and you are currently advertising it within the app and without as *the* compatible solution with Parallels Desktop 11. But now you say it is false advertising. Downgrading critiical business software to an old version because your backup product doesn't work as advertised is not an acceptable workaround, sorry. Is there an ETA for this update? Thanks

Hi Doni,
at the moment there is no official support of Parallels Desktop 11 in Acronis True Image:

Sorry for the confusion.
Thank you,

Then why is ATI being advertised within PD11 and without as *the* solution for PD backups? Why is there a button within PD11 specifically to launch ATI? I'm sorry, but continuing to advertise ATI working with PD is false advertising, if you're only referring to past versions. And without PD11 support, there is zero value to ATI for Mac as a product. I'm sorry to have spent so much time testing and troubleshooting it.
If you update ATI to support current-edition PD snapshots, I'll try it out again.
Thanks for confirming.

There is no ETA so far for adding Parallels Desktop 11 support but it is certainly considered for future versions. Main difficulty here that Parallels has changed API in non-business and non-pro editions. However, I do understand your concern very well and I'll forward your feedback to development.
I wish you a happy holiday season!

Follow-up: I'm trying out Parallels Desktop v.11 for Business now, which does include that necessary prlctl commands. Now when I run a backup, it doesn't error on the prlctl snapshot command, but it never creates a snapshot. Instead it shows:
Exclude ParallelsDesktop file: /Users/xxx/Documents/Parallels/Windows10.pvm/{cc8e7a2e-fb98-4bc2-b881-783ace1c8317}.mem.sh
Exclude ParallelsDesktop file: /Users/xxx/Documents/Parallels/Windows10.pvm/Snapshots/{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.mem
Exclude ParallelsDesktop file: /Users/xxx/Documents/Parallels/Windows10.pvm/Windows8-0.hdd/Windows8-0.hdd.0.{5fbaabe3-6958-40ff-92a7-860e329aab41}.hds
Makes sense to exclude mem files, but obviously it needs an hds file. So ATI code must say if snapshot-capable, look for the newest hds after snapshot and exclude that, which makes sense since that should be the snapshot delta. But since no snapshot is ever created, it's excluding the newest hds it sees -- which is the entire main disk image.
Q1: Are you saying even with Pro or Business edition, ATI 2016 doesn't work with PD11?
Q2: If so, any ETA for at least this fix? The commands are available in Pro & Business edition, so it should be able to work. No major rearchitecture needed.
Thanks

Hi Doni,
For now none of the PD11 versions are supported by Acronis True Image 2016.

We are considering implementing the support for this software. Unfortunately, no ETA is available for the moment.
